UPDATED: Someone claims exotic pets left at Virginia Tech ...

BLACKSBURG, Va.?

UPDATED 12:37 p.m.: Virginia Tech police say someone has stepped forward to say a menagerie of snakes, bugs, and furry creatures found in an underground steam tunnel belongs to her.

Maj. Kevin Foust said Friday the woman called late Thursday to claim the collection, which is now in the possession of a group that handles exotic animals. he declined to identify the caller or why the animals ended up in the tunnel, citing a police investigation.

Workers on Tech?s campus made the unusual discovery earlier Thursday. the animals include snakes, a black widow spider, a cage of crickets, a tarantula, two lizards, a frog, three mice and a rabbit.

Faust declined to say what charges might be filed.the steam tunnels are off-limits to everyone except Tech workers.

????????????

Snakes, a black widow spider, and a cage of crickets were among the menagerie found in Virginia Tech?s underground steam tunnel network.

Campus police say the exotic array was discovered on Thursday and now they?re trying to figure out how they got there.

The Roanoke Times says the find included two nonpoisonous snakes, a black widow spider, a tarantula, twolizards, a frog, a rabbit and three mice.

Police Chief Wendell Flinchum says police don?t believe the animals were abandoned because they appeared to be in good condition.

Students living on the Blacksburg campus may keep fish in a 10-gallon aquarium. Under university policy, however, possession of any other pets on campus by students is prohibited.

The steam tunnels are also off limits.

DETROIT (AP) ? Seven members of a Midwest militia accused of plotting to overthrow the government are set to stand trial, where jurors will decide whether federal authorities prevented an attack by homegrown extremists or simply made too much of the boasts of weekend warriors who had pledged to "take our nation back."

Opening statements were set for Monday once a jury was seated in the trial of members of the Hutaree militia, who are charged with conspiring to commit sedition, or rebellion, as well as weapon crimes.

Following the March 2010 arrests in southern Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said the time had come for authorities to "take them down." An undercover agent had recorded the group's leader, David Stone, saying the militia needed to "start huntin'" police soon.

But since their capture, only one of nine people charged has struck a plea deal, an unusually low number in a case with so many defendants. Their attorneys have maintained a consistent stance: The anti-government talk was simply colorful yet aimless bluster akin to frustrated pals drowning sorrows around a campfire.

"I'm going to fight it tooth and nail," David Stone's wife and co-defendant, Tina Mae Stone, said during a break in jury selection last week. "It was just a bunch of good ol' boys out to have fun. We did survival stuff. I did it mostly to spend time with my husband. People tell me, 'good luck.' I don't need luck. I've got God on my side."

The militia prepared for survival in case of domestic chaos or an attack on the United States, attorneys Todd Shanker and Richard Helfrick said in a court filing. They noted the group even had a website and promoted its weekend outings.

"Regardless of the charges in the indictment, there is no dispute that the aims of the Hutaree militia included the free exercise of their 1st and 2nd Amendment rights, including freedom of speech, association, assembly and the right to bear arms," said the lawyers, who represent David Stone Jr.

The indictment describes a more sinister band. The government says the Hutaree, based in Michigan's Lenawee County, was an anti-government group committed to fighting authorities who belong to a so-called "New World Order." The defendants are accused of conspiring to someday ambush and kill a police officer, then attack the funeral procession with explosives and trigger a broader revolt against the U.S. government.

"The court will hear testimony and examine evidence concerning this particular group's hatred for, and desire to do physical harm to, law enforcement," Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Graveline said.

The government has more than 100 hours of audio and video, including the recording of David Stone, 47, apparently talking about police.

"I think we gotta just start huntin' 'em here pretty soon. ... They're easy to find, they're sittin' alongside the road and they got these red and blue lights on top of their car," he said.

A co-defendant, Michael Meeks of Manchester, Mich., replied: "It's like a Kmart super special or whatever."

But some conversations were sprinkled with laughter and a mix of subjects, including strippers and drawing Hitler mustaches on photos of state troopers. Agents seized machine guns, unregistered rifles, ammunition and parts for improvised explosive devices.

The government's case got off to a rough start in 2010, when U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts released the nine until trial under strict conditions. The government swiftly appealed but then agreed that four could go home wearing electronic monitors. An appeals court ultimately ordered the other five to remain locked up, including David Stone.

The government relied on an undercover agent inside the group and an informant. But the informant comes with warts: He pleaded guilty in state court to firing a gun during a dispute with his wife and also attempted suicide. Another witness who was married to a Hutaree member not charged in the case attempted suicide and told a grand jury she's prone to panic attacks.

"How often do American citizens get charged with sedition or inciting discontent and resistance against big government? Heck, most citizens are discontented with the government," said Lloyd Meyer, a Chicago lawyer and former terrorism prosecutor. "In this case, no one pulled a trigger and no one got hurt. ... A jury could believe that the feds went after this group with a meat cleaver instead of a scalpel."

But Alan Gershel, a former prosecutor who teaches at Cooley Law School in suburban Detroit, said the allegations in the indictment seem more than goofy talk.

"There was planning. There was acquisition of firearms. There was training," he said. "Do you have to wait until the first shot is fired? You have to choose the moment of time when things go beyond chatter. That's what the government is aiming at here."

Joshua Clough of Blissfield, Mich., is the only defendant to make a deal with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty in December to illegal use of a firearm, faces a mandatory five-year prison sentence and could be called as a witness to testify against the Hutaree.

Besides the Stones and Meeks, the other defendants are Joshua Stone of Lenawee County; Thomas Piatek of Whiting, Ind.; and Kristopher Sickles of Sandusky, Ohio. Jacob Ward of Huron, Ohio, will have a separate trial. Besides conspiracy charges, all face at least one firearm charge and some have more.

Whitney Houston In 1999: 'I Didn't Know How To Say No'

Singer worries to John Norris about letting down her millions of fans.
By James Dinh

Whitney Houston's road to superstardom wasn't without sacrifices, and that was something the late icon realized during her career.

In the midst of the shocking news that the megastar had died Saturday afternoon (February 11), MTV News is taking a look back at a 1999 interview, in which the singer/actress opens up about career lessons like learning how to say no.

"I got that singer thing, where your cords get so swollen and they want to take a break," an energetic Houston tells MTV News' John Norris about her condition after canceling shows due to sickness.

Donning sunglasses and a short brown bob, Houston calls herself "soft" when reminiscing about memories like her Greatest Love World Tour (her first headlining world tour) because of her then-desire to be a people-pleaser.

"I'm pretty stern about my convictions and what I mean," the diva explains during the Boston tour stop. "But when it comes down to certain things, I didn't know how to say no. I didn't, because there's a lot of people out there."

Asked what goes through her head prior to performing a show, Houston says, "What really goes through my head is what note am I really going to, like, really start off with. You know what I mean? Just from the groove of my show. I know the show. They don't know the show."

From career lessons to her love life, Houston also chatted about then-husband Bobby Brown, saying the former New Edition frontman turned her shows into a family affair when they made stops in his hometown of Boston. "I got so many Brown relatives here. You kidding me? Oh my God! And there's a lot of them. But he has a lot of fam here. It should be a good gig."

Share your condolences with Whitney's family and friends on our Facebook page.

i read through your thread.. it was interesting.. entertaining even. it sounds like an amazing story, you really could make a story out of it.

but i don't know what kind of advice you are asking for? every single person who has commented has told you the same thing - that she seems really messed up and you should leave her. either take their advice and leave her, or ignore it and take her back. there is not really much to discuss about it.. everyone has said the same thing.

in terms of your questions... if you really need to know, then ask her. none of us know the answer.

White House didn't foresee birth control backlash (AP)

WASHINGTON ? It's not like he wasn't warned.

As President Barack Obama considered a decision on birth control that would turn into an unexpected political nightmare, he heard it from inside and outside his White House: He risked a fierce backlash if he required religious employers to provide insurance coverage for contraception in violation of their beliefs.

Over the course of months, Catholic groups and officials spoke with White House aides, sent letters and wrote opinion columns. Vice President Joe Biden and Obama's then-chief of staff, Bill Daley, both Catholics, and other top administration officials spoke of the need to be aware of the consequences, given how Catholic groups would view the decision and how it would affect them.

But the president was hearing from the other side, too. Women's health advocates and their allies inside the White House were adamant about the importance of making free contraception available to all women; to them, it was a matter of health and fairness. Democratic senators and senior advisers joined in.

In the end, that's where Obama came down.

What came next evidently surprised the White House.

There were furious protests from Catholic groups, including administration allies. Republicans and even some Democrats were outraged.

The rising furor threatened to overwhelm the president's message and affect his re-election hopes. With no sign of the firestorm abating, Obama announced a hasty and embarrassing backtrack Friday.

"This is an issue where people of good will on both sides of the debate have been sorting through some very complicated questions to find a solution that works for everyone. With today's announcement, we've done that," Obama said. "Religious liberty will be protected, and a law that requires free preventive care will not discriminate against women."

Under the approach, employees at church-affiliated institutions such as Catholic hospitals or charities still could get free birth control coverage, but it would come directly from their health insurer. Employers would not provide or pay for it.

This solution soothed some concerns from religious groups while keeping women's groups satisfied.

So why wasn't this approach taken in the first place?

___

Similar solutions had been advocated to the White House for months.

According to a senior administration official, some approaches were considered and rejected as unworkable, but what came out Friday simply hadn't occurred to administration officials weeks earlier.

Back then, administration officials perhaps didn't feel the same sense of urgency, according to the official, who said the policy process could have been stronger. The official insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

To many, it seemed a needlessly self-inflicted wound for a president known for taking a politically cautious approach. The White House insisted Obama was attuned to the concerns of religious employers, especially since he had worked with Catholic parishes early in his career in Chicago, and that he intended to address those concerns in time.

But to some Catholics it appeared the administration failed to understand their concerns and how the decision would resonate.

"Lord knows we tried" to warn the administration, said Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice lobby.

Campbell said the administration seemed focused on the health issues involved in putting Obama's health care law in place. "Even though a bunch of us weighed in and said there was this other layer of concern, it's like above where they ordinarily focus, so it just didn't compute," Campbell said.

"I don't think they fully understood the religious liberty side and I certainly don't think they understood just how it would be received by Catholics," said Stephen Schneck, a political scientist at the Catholic University of America.

They soon would find out.

___

The administration announced the original policy on Jan. 20.

Within hours, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called it an affront to religious liberty and urged Catholics to tell their elected leaders to rescind it. Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of New York, the conference's president, appeared in a Web video to accuse the administration of being "on the wrong side of the Constitution."

About a week later, priests read letters from bishops in churches across the nation, expressing their concerns.

Republicans soon pounced. GOP presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich accused the president of an attack on religion. Congressional Republicans announced plans to overturn the policy.

The White House began hearing from generally supportive outsiders as well.

Commentators such as E.J. Dionne and Mark Shields jumped on Obama for displaying a tin ear to Catholic concerns.

Former Indiana congressman and ambassador Tim Roemer and other moderate Democrats spoke out. Among the organizations that mobilized was Democrats for Life of America.

"It became apparent that this was not going to be something that was just going to lose steam," said Kristen Day, the group's executive director. "The ranks were actually increasing rather than decreasing."

Former Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., said he and Roemer offered the perspective of two lawmakers who had represented conservative Democratic districts.

Stupak said he wondered, "Why would you pick this fight in an election year? In any year, to tell you the truth."

"At first they were sort of cool: `We know what we're doing, we'll get it resolved,'" Stupak said of the White House. "Toward the end, in the last week, it was more like, `We're working on it, we've heard you. We'll get this thing behind us.'"

Several Democrats broke publicly with the president. Former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, a recent chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said the White House "made a bad decision."

___

Even as pressure mounted, Democrats supporting access to contraceptives pushed to make sure the White House didn't retreat.

For New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and other Democratic women in the Senate, their last opportunity to make their case came Wednesday, when the president took his motorcade to Nationals Stadium in Washington to meet with Senate Democrats.

Obama offered no hint an announcement was two days away, but under questioning he offered an assurance.

"He said to all of us that he was committed to the principle that women should have access to that contraceptive coverage," Shaheen said.

That same day, administration officials including senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and the first lady's chief of staff, Tina Tchen, convened a meeting with women's groups at the White House to urge more women to speak out in support of the president's decision, a Democratic official said.

Participants discussed reframing the debate as less about the Catholic Church and more about a war on women, the official said, insisting on anonymity to discuss the private meeting.

By then it was already becoming clear that Obama would have to change course. Some 48 hours later, he stepped before the microphones in the White House briefing room to announce that he was.

I am very weak, and tired all of the time, and missing work, I am an office Supervisor. I am wandering what has caused this, and am curious to know any detailed info that someone could share with me. Whether your husband will ever be able to do physical labor again, will depend on the cause(s) of his problem.

Restrictive lung disease is somewhat complicated to explain. I could go into great detail, but may end up confusing you. Here is a great webpage I found for you:

Lack of Concentration

Asthma

Cystic fibrosisof the lung tissue (Scoliosis, Asbestosis, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) This is when the lung tissue loses its elasticity and becomes more stiff and fibrotic. Hence, the lungs dont stretch and expand as well. Another cause is chest deformities. Some things that can cause this would be scoliosis, kyphosis, or kyphoscoliosis.

Snoring

other things forgot to mention is occupational exposure to asbestos, coal mining, fumes, and other dusts. the issue needs further detailed history with his physician

Headaches

Distressed...

it seems confusing here, flrestrictive cardiomyopathy prognosisuids in the lungs is likely heart ilure secondary to his previous heart attack, the other thing the stress test (if you mean cardiac stress test) is not the test to comment on lung function unless you mean Cardiopulmonary Stress Test which is different than the test which is usually done after heart attack as a risk stratification. in general terms restrictive lung diseases are those in which the expansion of the lung is restricted either because of diseases of the lung tissue, the pleura which is the layer that cover the lungs, the chest wall or the neuromuscular tissues. the possibilities really wide. the lung diseases like sarcoidosis, hypersinsitivity pneumonitis, cryptogenic organising pneumonia, eosinophilic lung disorders, drugs like amiodorone which is a heart medication, conective tissue disorders and vasculitic disorders like systemic sclerosis, lupus, churg strauss syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other causes. the pleura is unlikely the case in your husband, chest wall diseases basically any abnormal chest walll structure and shape, neuromuscular like ALS, GBS. in your husband its very important to know what is his heart function and make sure that the restriction is not related to his poor heart function if found (by doing echocardiography). if thats not the case then CT chest is indicated after reviewing his old chest X-rays, and reviewing his history in more detail to narrow the diffrential diagnosis with him. tests may include (guided by history) blood work for connective tissue diseases

, pulmonary function tests, and CT chest, bronchoscopy if indicated and even surgical lung biopsy if no conclusion achieved after all of above.

Restrictive cardiomyopathylung disease causes lower lung volumes over all. There are several things that can cause this.Fibrosis

Itchy/ Watery eyes

Restrictive cardiomyopathylung disease.cant find much info on the web. he has an appt with a pulmonologist, but in the mean time my questions are, what causes this and what is the prognosis? Will he ever be able to work again (he is a plummer/pipe fitter).thanks for any help you can give.

COMMON TRAITS OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTION

Neonatal cystic fibrosis screening

I have inherited gout, and fibromialgea , IBS, Acid reflux, and thyroid disease from my ther, which makes a diagnosis difficult because they have similar symptoms. If anyone can help, please!!! I need answers..

Sinus problems

Mold / Mildew in basement & bathrooms

Theres a ton more I could get into but its very confusing. And I dont want to overdraw the subject by copy-pasting stuff like most people do here.

Bad taste, looks like an answer when it isnt.

We still have no diagnosis.he had a bronchoscopy last thursday.we will get the results tomorrow.i will post here, if we have a diagnosis!crossing my fingers!

Stentwas put in.Now, about 2 years later, he got sick, chest x ray said not pneumonia, but he is very short ofbreath

I have a 21 year old son with asthma but since having an air purifier in my home that covers the whole house; Ive found it to help all my children even in the midst of this WI winter - weve had no colds or flu or other respiratory ills.Heres some obvious signs in your own home that can indicate a need simply for whole house air purification.

Abdomen - swollen

-Andy, RRT, CPFT

Try going through that.

Smoking

But in short,Restrictive

Breath odor, has fluid in the lungs, no strength, blood oxygen level is very low, we just got the results of a stress test and have been told he hasrestrictive

thanks so much for the links posted above, they were very helpful!!!

Is this some kind of promotion? I find it in bad taste when someone is suffering from an obviously serious disease that the cleanair advertisement comes in. Susseptable people may think an air purifier will cure a serious illness.

Sleeplessness / Light sleeper

Speak to your husbands doctor, he should be discussing what type of restricive lung disease you are dealing with. I am suspcous that it may be due to some occumational exposure. Either the chemicals or cauterizing metals involved with plumbing.

However, as an avid sun bather isn?t going to automatically lead to skin cancer, also it isn?t only cause. Skin cancer can also be caused by damaging free radicals from carcinogens as well as unavoidable upshots of ageing. Still, a better way of avoidance would be to stay out of the sun or just use a solid sunscreen when in sunlight.
