Microsoft Israel?s Best & Brightest on Parade at ThinkNext Tel-Aviv

ThinkNextSlowly but surely, Microsoft Israel is making itself more and more relevant for the local startup community. In fact, we recently covered its latest major push, the Windows Azure Accelerator. Then there's the annual ThinkNext conference which has become one of the local tech community's staple events. The more interesting portion of the event (in my opinion at least) is the demo area, where startups chosen by the the local Microsofties showcase their goods. So unless you happen to be at the event in the port of Tel-Aviv this afternoon, here's what you're missing out:

Diablo 3 beta throws open doors, this weekend only

Diablo 3, the much-anticipated fantasy game, is scheduled for launch in North America on May 15. In the meantime, you can get your hands on the?Diablo 3?beta version.

Diablo 3: One of the most eagerly-anticipated games in recent memory, and also one of the most frequently delayed. Horizons readers will remember that back in September of last year,?Blizzard announced that Diablo 3, originally slated to arrive in 2011, would be held until early 2012 ? enough time for the developer to polish up the gameplay.?

"[T]his week we pulled together people from all of the teams involved with the game to decide whether we felt it would be ready before the end of December, and we grudgingly came to the conclusion that it would not," a Blizzard exec wrote at the time. "Ultimately, we feel that to deliver an awesome Diablo sequel that lives up to our expectations and yours as well, we should take a little more time and add further polish to a few different elements of the game."

Since then, Blizzard has finalized a May 15 North America launch date for Diablo 3.?

This week comes news that Blizzard will stage an open beta event for Diablo 3, a kind of "stress test" for the forthcoming fantasy title. VentureBeat?reports?that the beta test will extend from Friday afternoon to 1 p.m. EST on Monday. Anyone with a valid?Battle.net account is invited to play (excepting folks in the?Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau markets, who are getting a separate beta event, on April 23).

You can get started here.?

Diablo 3, like Diablo 2 and the original Diablo, will take place in the the murky, shadowy world of Sanctuary. Among the playable character classes are the newly-introduced "monks" ? "priest-warriors who follow the divine injunctions of their Patriarchs, the rulers of Ivgorod," according to Blizzard. Sounds like some good, geeky fun to us.?

HTC One X drop tested, inevitable things happen

If you're anything like me, dropping your prized phone is something that could really put a serious downer on your day, week and month. Add into the mix that phone being the HTC One X, and that's just one big nightmare. But what would happen if you did happen to drop it? Thanks to the guys at HTCPedia, we need wonder no longer. It's pretty painful viewing to see such a device get trashed on purpose. Right now mine's sat on a feather pillow having seen this. Enjoy!

After 4-month surge, gas prices start falling

(AP) ? The worst appears to be over. Gasoline prices are going down.

After a four-month surge pushed gasoline to nearly $4 per gallon in early April, drivers, politicians and economists worried that prices might soar past all-time highs, denting wallets, angering voters and dragging down an economy that is struggling to grow.

Instead, pump prices have dropped 6 cents over two weeks to a national average on Friday of $3.88. Experts say gasoline could fall another nickel or more next week.

Drivers might also get to say something they haven't since October 2009 ? they're paying less at the pump than they did a year ago.

"It's nice, much more manageable," said Mark Timko, who paid less than $4 per gallon Wednesday in the Chicago suburb of Burr Ridge, Ill., for the first time since March. "I wasn't sure how high they were going to go this year."

Gasoline prices are lower than they were a year ago in 11 states, according to the Oil Price Information Service. At $3.88, the national average is still high, but it's down from a peak of $3.94. Predictions of $5 gasoline earlier this year have ? mercifully ? evaporated.

Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service, expects gasoline prices to drop to just above $3.80 by late next week. Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group, said the falling prices will put more money into the economy for Americans to spend elsewhere.

A 10-cent drop in gasoline prices would mean drivers would have an extra $37 million per day to spend on other things.

Gasoline prices have been pushed high by crude prices that have averaged $104 per barrel this year. World oil demand is expected to set a record this year and a series of production outages around the world have kept supplies low.

Oil rose to $110 as the West tightened sanctions on Iran in an effort to make it harder for that country to sell oil and pressure it to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Fears that retaliation by Iran could disrupt Middle Eastern supplies pushed oil prices up by as much as $15 per barrel, experts say.

Closer to home, there were concerns about restricted supplies of gasoline on the East Coast after three refineries closed and two more were set to be shuttered. Gasoline futures prices, which are quickly reflected in pump prices, rose to their highest levels in nearly a year.

But several factors have contributed to the lower prices at the pump:

? Oil prices have fallen in recent weeks. Iran and the West are negotiating, the growth in demand for oil has moderated, and world oil supplies are rising again thanks to more production from Saudi Arabia, Libya and the United States. Oil has fallen to $103.05 per barrel, down from a peak of $110.55 on March 1.

? Potential buyers for the two East Coast refineries have emerged, so they are now expected to stay open.

? U.S. drivers have gotten frugal at the gas pump. Gasoline demand has dropped by about 6 percent, compared with the same period last year, according to the latest government data.

In response, gasoline futures have since dropped by 8 percent. That's expected to cut the price of wholesale gasoline, and those savings will be passed on at the pump.

Prices are not expected to plummet. Even if the Iran situation were totally resolved ? an unlikely event ? analysts say oil would not fall much below $90 per barrel.

And there's a possibility prices could still reverse themselves. Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, inflamed Middle East tensions or fighting in a major oil-producing country like Iran or Nigeria could reduce supplies. A surge in world economic growth could increase demand.

Gasoline prices rise nearly every spring, and often peak in May.

This year, they're falling a little earlier, and motorists are already making summer vacation plans.

Timko was going to take the train to Washington. D.C., this June with his wife. With gas prices down by about 40 cents per gallon ? and more importantly below $4 ? in their neighborhood, they've decided to drive instead.

"Under $4 makes a big difference," he said. "Just from a perception standpoint."

Alienware refreshes M14x, M17x and M18x with new graphics, same old processors

Alienware refreshes M14x, M17x and M18x gaming laptops with mSATA drives, new NVIDIA graphics

Sure, they may look the same, but Alienware's decided to give what's going on inside its glowing gaming laptops a thorough refresh. Starting with graphics support, the 2012 update of the M14x, M17x and M18x will all be able to handle NVIDIA's 600 series graphics with GDRR5 memory, bolstered by support for the new PCI Express 3.0 -- which Alienware reckons will give double the bandwidth seen on version 2.0. Memory has been given a kick with 1600MHz dual channel memory now the base standard on all three customizable machines, starting at 6GB, up from 4GB in the older models. Capacity for the smaller M14x is locked down at 16GB of RAM, while the large M17x and M18x will be able to utilize up to 32GB. Additionally, these freshened-up models will pack Intel Core i7 processors -- but it's the Sandy Bridge kind. While an Ivy Bridge version is logically the next step, it looks like we'll have to wait for Intel to let its new hardware out to play before we see it in these gaming laptops.

On the storage side, Alienware's keen to trumpet new support for mSATA technology, with the new storage medium capable of acting as either a boot drive to optimize Windows or as a caching drive for improved gaming performance -- we reckon the latter sounds like more fun. In fact, with the options of standard SSD, mSATA and more pedestrian storage drives, there's up to 23 different HDD options on the M18x alone. Customization-wise, the M14x also gets the new option of a built-in Blu-ray drive. Audio hasn't been ignored either, with Creative's new Sound Blaster Recon3Di High-Definition hardware folded into each of the laptops, with the same built-in speakers that got the Klipsch seal of approval last time around. Overall, it looks like there should be plenty to chew over in benchmark comparisons between the 2012 update and the models it replaces. Still, we can't shake the feeling that Alienware must be at least planning to upgrade its laptops elsewhere -- perhaps its worth waiting a little bit longer.

Guest Post: Back on the Dating Scene Post-Divorce? How to Make ...

April 20, 2012 ? 6:49 am

If you are single after divorce, you may have never thought that you?d be ready to date again.? But once you have recovered from the heartbreak and are back to feeling like your old self, you will find that you are ready to open yourself up to love once more.? And a great search method, especially for divorced singles, is the method of dating on the internet. ?But because the web is a vast world that is made up of all sorts of people who might not have the same good intentions as you, if you don?t practice the proper safety precautions, you pose the risk of running into someone more terrifying than your ex-spouse.? Here?s how to avoid such an incident:

Share?but not too much.? The whole point of using online dating is to get to know new people in the hopes that one of them could be eligible in the form of a date, friend or even long-term relationship material.? But if you give away too much information to a possible match before you have spent a decent amount of time communicating with them to discover whether or not they are who they say they are, then you could be asking for trouble.? Be cautious of anyone who is pushing for too much detail from you in the beginning and never disclose the following until you feel secure that your new online friend is worthy of your trust:

  • Last name
  • Personal email address
  • Phone number
  • Home address
  • Business address
  • Access to your financial accounts
  • Anything else that would be identity revealing

Take things nice and slow.? Because much of the awkwardness that comes with traditional first dates is eliminated with dating online, most people are more comfortable communicating and sharing with others over the internet than in person; so often relationships move faster online.? But just because you?ve spent endless hours and many a sleepless night chatting it up with your cyber-crush doesn?t mean that you need to accelerate at warp speeds when it comes to meeting them face-to- face.? And even when that time comes, it?s imperative to continue taking things slow.? Enjoy the beginning ?get-to-know-you? stages of the relationship?if there is a real connection, then there?s no need to rush it; there will be plenty of time to get to know one another on a more intimate level later.

Put safety first on your first dates.? When you?ve finally reached a point where you feel that it is an appropriate time to meet in-person with your online match, that is awesome?but you aren?t in the homestretch yet, my safe online dater.? Not to worry, though?you can still have fun; just make sure that your first date-nerves come from excitement and not from fear for your safety by keeping the following advice in mind:

  • Don?t accept a ride from your date.? While it?s a nice offer, you don?t want this person to know where you call home and you definitely don?t want to be trapped in a car with them if the date doesn?t go as planned. ?Use your own ride to meet your date and be sure to let a friend know where you are going.
  • Pick a popular, public spot.? The first few dates with your online match should not be spent at their apartment or on some deserted private beach.? Choose instead a public spot and even consider making it a double/group date so that you have other people with you to ensure your comfort and safety.
  • Be aware of what is happening around you.? While that bottle of Merlot sounds mighty tempting, it?s best to skip any alcoholic drinks during these first few meetings so that you can be in complete control.? Keep an eye on your drinks, your belongings and don?t forget to listen to your gut if it tells you that something isn?t right?your intuition is rarely wrong.

Troublesome Karakoram glaciers getting bigger, new study suggests

Despite the global temperature increase and the overall shrinking of the world's glaciers, some glaciers in the Karakoram mountains have actually grown over the past decade, according to a new study.

Practicing good science often means accepting inconvenient data. The results of a new study that depict the recent growth of some Asian glaciers ? despite the warming global climate ? surely fall into this category, especially in the US where, according to a 2011 Harris Poll, public belief in manmade warming dropped from 71 percent in 2007 to 44 percent in 2011.

This research, led by glaciologist Julie Gardelle of the University of Grenoble, has confirmed suspicions about the massive glaciers in the Karakoram Mountains along the border of India, Pakistan and China. The researchers analyzed satellite images of a 2,168 square-mile area, and found that the glaciers are not losing ice, but probably gaining it. The study's results were recently published in Nature Geoscience.

For the past seven years, scientists have noted that the Karakoram glaciers have been spreading. Yet it was not clear whether the glaciers were merely becoming thinner, with the same amount of ice, or less, spread over a larger area, or if they were actually gaining mass.

To determine which, Gardelle and her team used data taken by instruments aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor and the French SPOT5 satellite, which collected the relevant data in late 1999 and 2008, respectively. The researchers estimated that, over this time period, the glaciers gained mass. On average, the glaciers developed a new patina of ice that, if melted, would amount to just over four inches of water.

Gardelle?s team, as well as many other scientists, say they cannot yet determine why the glaciers grew. The Karakoram region has been a climatological oddity for decades. Between 1961 and 2011, weather stations there have reported increases in winter precipitation and decreases in summer temperatures. A lack of glacial meltwater has constricted the flow of one of the local rivers by 20 percent, over the same time period. Incidentally, the 46,000 ice masses that compose the glaciers of the Tibetan plateau provide water to over 1.4 billion people living in central and southern Asia.

Though scientifically?intriguing, the scientists involved in this study are wary of the political impact of these results; especially in light of the 2007 snafu involving the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?s mistaken assertion that the Himalayan glaciers would be eradicated by 2035, and the damage to the credibility of the IPCC?s otherwise robust body of research. Unfortunately, the political volatility of manmade global warming is such that even the smallest oversight can have a significant impact on the general public's perception.

Jessica Simpson: Inside the Delivery Room (?)

Jessica Simpson hasn't even given birth to her baby girl Maxi yet, but that's not about to stop one tabloid from taking us INSIDE THE DRAMATIC DELIVERY!

You gotta love that on the week Brad and Angelina get engaged, for real, that In Touch will make up some other cover story. Why not lead with Brange?

After all, they've gotten engaged so many times before, according to your magazine ... why not cash in on the real thing when people might actually buy it?!

Jessica Simpson Birth

In any case, Jessica Simpson is ready to pop any day now, which makes this odd cover - how can you be inside a delivery that hasn't taken place? - sort of justified.

Sort of. It's possible Jess has already elected to have a c-section, is under hypnosis to soothe her cold sweats and has already planned her first words to her baby.

Still, none of this has happened yet, because she is enormously pregnant.

We'll know when she gives birth and Jessica Simpson will provide all the Jessica Simpson quotes we need at that time. How could ITW compare with that now?

Facebook passwords: why companies don?t use them to see your posts

Several states are considering laws to bar companies form asking for applicants? social media passwords. But the social-media world is easily mined even without passwords, experts say.?

From Connecticut to California, concern over a rise in employer demands for access to prospective employee?s social media logins and passwords is leading lawmakers to take action.

There is pending legislation in at least five states ? including Minnesota, Illinois, California, and Massachusetts ? and the Maryland legislature just passed its own version of a bill prohibiting the practice.

But as this groundswell grows, questions are rising about whether laws will actually stop employers from seeking out digital information in an increasingly digital age.

?There is a legitimate and growing concern about privacy on the Internet,? says Katharine Parker of Proskauer Employment Law Counseling & Training Group in New York, who advises employers on hiring practices and other HR issues. ?Is there any privacy on the Internet, should there be, and what laws are needed to regulate it are all questions that are just now being asked.?

Indeed, many experts say that companies do not need to ask for Facebook passwords to get information on applicants or employees. The notion that privacy settings make things on Facebook private ?is not necessarily accurate,? says Ms. Parker.

?Even if you have a lot of privacy settings on Facebook, it?s not private if you have lots of friends,? she says.

There are many ways to get information from applicants? social media without asking for their password, says Kabrina Krebel Chang, assistant professor of business law at Boston University?s School of Management.

?In many cases, the applicant is Facebook friends with someone already at the workplace,? she notes via e-mail.

There is nothing to stop that friend from showing others in the company the Facebook page. ?If there are no direct Facebook friends, many applicants are ?friends? of other pages or have liked other pages such as alma maters, interest groups, products, etc.,? Ms. Chang adds.

Human resources departments will simply switch to sending ?friend requests? to applicants and presenting this view of the individual during the interview process, says Charles Palmer, executive director of the Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania.

?It?s a little less overt and completely legal,? he says via e-mail, adding that he expects ?to see more investment into ?social forensics? to help weed out the applicant pool.?

The main thing for potential ? and current ? employees to remember is that any information that can be accessed on a computer is potentially going to be used in a hiring process, says Deborah Sweeny, CEO of MyCorporation.com.

Most people with time and the right knowledge and technology ?can access information that?s been posted online, even if it?s been posted to a social media profile that?s been made private,? she says via e-mail. Both employees and employers need to realize that anything they put online, could end up being public, she adds.

For these reasons, some experts think it is not only unnecessary but unwise for companies to ask for social media passwords.

?Once you ask for this kind of access, then you are on notice for anything that you might find,? says Todd Taylor, an attorney with Moore & Van Allen who specializes in communication technology. ?I would advise against going after information that isn?t already public for the simple reason that if you see something and you don?t act on it, you have the potential issue of a negligent hire down the road.?

Plastic garbage in oceans: Understanding marine pollution from microplastic particles

ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2012) ? Large quantities of globally produced plastics end up in the oceans where they represent a growing risk. Above all very small objects, so-called microplastic particles, are endangering the lives of the many sea creatures. An estimate of how greatly the oceans are polluted with microplastic particles has so far failed in the absence of globally comparable methods of investigation and data. Together with British and Chilean colleagues, scientists of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association have now analysed all published studies on this topic and have proposed standardised guidelines for the recording and characterisation of microplastic particles in the sea.

Plastic bottles washed on to the beach are as much a part of the coast as the sound of seagulls. What the eye does not see are the innumerable ultra-small plastic objects which float in the water, are washed on to the beach or settle on the sea bed. Scientists refer to these plastic particles as "microplastic particles," understanding these to mean plastic objects whose diameter is less than five millimetres -- whereby the majority of microplastic particles are smaller than a grain of sand or the tip of a needle. It is this property that also makes them so dangerous to the sea dwellers. "Microplastic particles are swallowed by organisms and absorbed via the digestive tract. It has been possible, for example, to detect them in the tissue of mussels or other animals," says Dr. Lars Gutow, biologist at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association. Toxic substances also attach to the small particles in the sea which then enter the food chain in this way and may therefore ultimately be dangerous to humans.

Lars Gutow and colleagues from the Universidad Cat?lica del Norte in Chile and the School of Marine Science and Engineering in Plymouth have now jointly addressed the question as to how greatly the oceans of the world are polluted with microplastic particles. The biologists analysed 68 scientific publications on this subject and determined that the results are difficult to compare. "Very different methods were used in these studies which is why it could not be understood whether the observed regional differences in the distribution of the plastic particles are real or whether they are attributable to the methods of recording," explains Prof. Martin Thiel, initiator of the now published comparative study and scientist at the Universidad Cat?lica del Norte. It emerged that 100,000 times more microplastic particles could be fished out of the water column if a net with a mesh of 85 micrometres was used instead of one with 450 micrometres.

Based on these findings the international team of researchers has now for the first time prepared guidelines for the recording and characterisation of microplastic particles and has published these in the Environmental Science & Technology journal in which the scientists also explain the possible origins of the plastic waste. "Microplastic particles reach the seas in different ways. A large share is accounted for by so-called plastic pellets used as a raw material in the manufacture of plastic products such as computer housings and other everyday articles. If these pellets are handled carelessly, during ship loading for example, many may be blown away by the wind and fall into the sea," explains Lars Gutow.

Microplastic particles are also to be found in cosmetics and cleaning agents, however. "Very small plastic particles are used as "abrasives" in many a peeling product. They then reach the sea via sewage water and rivers," says the biologist. And finally every plastic bottle, every plastic bag floating on the sea, one day disintegrates into countless microparticles. "It can take years for larger plastic parts to disintegrate primarily through physical processes. The UV radiation of the sun makes the plastic brittle. It is then broken down into ever smaller parts from the waves and friction processes," says Lars Gutow.

The smallest particles so far detected had a diameter of one micrometre which is one thousandth of a millimetre. Complex investigations are required to be able to determine such tiny plastic objects exactly and clarify their origins. "We recommend to every scientist to analyse very small microplastic particles using an infrared spectroscope. This procedure uncovers the constituents and permits an exact identification as a plastic," says Lars Gutow.

The scientists also point out gaps in their knowledge in their research guidelines. "The topic of plastics in the sea has become considerably more important in recent years. There is a lot of research going on. Nevertheless we do not know, for example, whether and in which quantity microplastic particles are deposited on rocky shores and in salt marshes. The latter are above all known for having a high retention potential for particles. Whether this also applies to microplastic particles is not so far known," says Martin Thiel who is examining the contamination of the Chilean coast with microplastic particles.

If in the future all marine researchers used standardised methods to record the microplastic particles based on the recommendations of this comparative study, then not only the reliability of their results ought to increase considerably. This then offers the chance of determining the final fate of microplastic particles accumulating in the world's oceans and to uncover the consequences of this pollution for the ecological systems and therefore for humans.

Kim Kardashian Running For Mayor Of Glendale?

Mayor Kim Kardashian is something the folks of Glendale could be hearing in the next five years. I am not kidding but this could be a joke. Recent footage from an unaired clip of Khloe & Lamar has Kim revealing to her younger sis that in five years she intends to run for mayor of Glendale. Why five years and why Glenda you ask? Well according to Kardashian Glendale is an Armenian town and five years because you have to be a resident of the town for five years before you can run for political office. To prove she is not kidding Kimmie informs Khloe that she is looking to buy a house there as well as confirm all the requirements to run for mayor. Just to prove to you how serious Kardashian wants you to think she is I have the video below. When I first watched it I have to say I laughed out loud.
