Reds beat Dodgers 6-0, clinch NL Central

CINCINNATI (AP) ? General manager Walt Jocketty hit the "send" button on his cellphone right at the final out, informing his manager that the Reds' championship celebration was on.

And with a familiar swing getting them there.

Jay Bruce was Cincinnati's Mr. Clinch again, hitting the homer that started the Reds toward a 6-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday that made good on their second try for the title. The only thing missing was the manager.

Dusty Baker spent another day in a Chicago hospital getting treated for an irregular heartbeat. Jocketty texted congratulations to the 63-year-old Baker on his fifth division title as a manager, including two during the last three years with Cincinnati.

"He is here everywhere," owner Bob Castellini said, standing in the middle of a soaked clubhouse that had beer and champagne dripping from the ceiling. "He is here in spirit, and everybody knows he's here. We hope to see him tomorrow."

The players toasted Baker before drenching each other.

"It's a shame he's not here," third baseman Scott Rolen said. "He digs this stuff. He's missed, there's no doubt about that."

The Reds videotaped the celebration, along with best wishes, to send to Baker. When they clinched two years ago, Baker wound up in the middle of a players' huddle, getting joyously soaked.

The 2010 party started with a dramatic Bruce homer, a first-pitch leadoff shot in the ninth against Houston's Tim Byrdak. On Saturday, he led off the fourth inning with a first-pitch homer off rookie Stephen Fife (0-2), putting Cincinnati ahead to stay with his team-leading 34th of the season.

"It's not the same as two years ago, but I'll take it," Bruce said. "We've been taking care of business for quite a while, so we knew this was coming. Today is a nutshell of what we've been doing all season."

Mat Latos (13-4) allowed six hits and didn't walk a batter in eight innings. Left-hander Aroldis Chapman made his first appearance since Sept. 10 ? a tired shoulder had sidelined him ? and finished it off by getting Hanley Ramirez to hit into a double play off a 99 mph fastball.

The celebration was on, though more subdued than two years ago.

"A couple of years ago, we were a surprise," said Joey Votto, who was the NL MVP that season. "It kind of crept up on us. We didn't expect it. This year, we felt we had something to prove."

As the Reds closed in on the final outs, second baseman Brandon Phillips pretended he was shaking a bottle of champagne and spraying it everywhere while sitting on the bench in the dugout. Phillips says the only other time he's had champagne was during the 2010 clubhouse celebration.

After the final out, players formed a huddle to the side of the mound, with pitcher Johnny Cueto spraying them with a bottle of water. An attendant rolled out a cart of gray championship shirts and hats.

Cincinnati became the first team in the majors to clinch a division title this season, leaving it with one goal left. The Reds are vying with Washington for the NL's top seed in the playoffs, both with 92 wins that lead the majors.

It's unclear when Baker will be back. The three-time manager of the year also won division titles with the Giants and Cubs. Baker reached the World Series once as a manager, losing a Game 7 against the Angels in 2002, his final season in San Francisco.

The Reds had their first opportunity to take the title on Friday night, but lost 3-1 to the Dodgers in 10 innings. Bruce had a chance to win it with another game-ending homer, but struck out leading off the ninth.

A day later, Bruce connected, Phillips added a solo homer, and rookie Todd Frazier singled home a run for more than enough. The Reds added three runs in the eighth, aided by reliever Jamey Wright's throwing error.

The Dodgers lost for the 11th time in 16 games, a swoon that has dropped them out of a wild-card spot. They trail St. Louis by three games and Milwaukee by a half-game for the final playoff berth.

Cincinnati's 92nd win is another high point under Baker, who took over in 2008 when the club was rebuilding with young stars Bruce, Votto and Cueto. The Reds improved each of the first two seasons, then became champions ahead of schedule by winning 91 games in 2010 to secure their first postseason appearance in 15 years.

Their inexperience showed in the playoffs, where the Reds got no-hit by Roy Halladay and swept by the Phillies in three games.

Things unraveled last year, when the front office decided to bring the team back virtually intact rather than upgrading its problem areas. Three of the five starting pitchers got hurt or sick during spring training, and several veterans had disappointing seasons, resulting in a third-place finish.

Cincinnati learned from its mistakes. The Reds traded two former first-round picks and starter Edinson Volquez to San Diego for Latos. Then they gave Votto an extra 10 years and $225 million on his contract.

The investments paid off in the first year.

"It's special because we've been there, we've done that," Castellini said. "We've also known how to get blown out in three (playoff) games. We don't feel we're going to let that happen again. I know we all feel that way. We're pretty confident. We'll see what happens."

Baker did some of his best managing during the season. The back end of the bullpen ? closer Ryan Madson, setup relievers Nick Masset and Bill Bray ? got wiped out by injuries during spring training. Baker eased Chapman into the unfamiliar closer's role, and he set a club record with 27 consecutive saves.

The gloomiest moment became a turning point.

Votto was the only consistent hitter going into July. He tore cartilage in his right knee and needed two operations. Baker was forced to juggle his lineup and batting order, trying to figure a way to make up for Votto's productivity and stay in the race for the next six weeks.

It worked beautifully. The Reds went 32-16 without Votto, pulling into a commanding lead in the NL Central. They were closing in on clinching the division when they went to Chicago this week, then had another setback. Baker felt bad on Wednesday and was taken to a Chicago hospital for treatment of his irregular heartbeat.

If Phillips gets his way, Baker won't miss out on the celebration entirely.

"I was looking forward to splashing some stuff in his face," Phillips said. "I saved a bottle to splash on him when he gets back."

NOTES: Los Angeles plans to start RHP Aaron Harang on short rest Sunday rather than go with LHP Clayton Kershaw, who hasn't pitched in a game since Sept. 11 because of a sore hip. He threw 20 pitches in the bullpen on Friday without problem. ... Dodgers C A.J. Ellis grounded out twice, extending his slump to 0 for 28.

Libyan Islamist militia swept out of Benghazi bases

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A Libyan Islamist militia was swept out of the eastern city of Benghazi in a popular protest against the armed groups that ran into the early hours of Saturday morning, Reuters witnesses said.

At least one person was killed and 20 wounded, a hospital source said, as militias tried to fight the demonstrators from a heavily fortified base. Gunfire could be heard in the area before the fighters were forced out.

Looters carried weapons out of the vacated Ansar al-Sharia military base compound as men clapped and chanted: "Say to Ansar al-Sharia, Benghazi will be your inferno."

Ansar al-Sharia has been linked to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi last week in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans died. It denies involvement.

The action against the group appeared to be part of a coordinated sweep of militia headquarters buildings by police, government troops and activists following a mass public demonstration against militia units on Friday.

Chanting "Libya, Libya," hundreds of demonstrators entered, pulling down militia flags and torching a vehicle inside Ansar al-Sharia's headquarters in Benghazi - once the base of forces of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, which tried to put down the first protests that sparked last year's uprising.

The crowd waved swords and even a meat cleaver, crying "No more al Qaeda!" and "The blood we shed for freedom shall not go in vain!"

"After what happened at the American consulate, the people of Benghazi had enough of the extremists," demonstrator Hassan Ahmed said. "They did not give allegiance to the army. So the people broke in and they fled."

"This place is like the Bastille. This is where Gaddafi controlled Libya from, and then Ansar al-Sharia took it over. This is a turning point for the people of Benghazi."

Adusalam al-Tarhouni, a government worker, who arrived with the first wave of protesters, said several pickup trucks with the group's fighters had initially confronted the protesters and opened fire. Two protesters were shot in the leg, he said.

"After that they got into their trucks and drove away," he said, adding protesters had freed four prisoners found inside.

As protesters left Ansar al-Sharia's headquarters, the crowd swelled, reaching thousands as it headed toward its military base, which was shared with another militia group.

Protesters said the militiamen opened fire as they arrived and several people were wounded.

"We came as peaceful protesters. When we got there they started shooting at us," student Sanad al-Barani said. "Five people were wounded beside me. They used 14.5 calibre machine guns."

After the crowd entered that compound, Libyan army trucks sped away from the base carrying government troops cheering in victory and crying out, "God is greatest."

Vigilantes armed with machetes and clubs blocked the highway leading away from the compound, stopping cars to prevent looters from driving off with heavy weapons.

"We went into the camp and we didn't find anyone. We just took these Kalashnikovs," said one youth, holding rifles.

The demonstrators also took over a compound belonging to the Abu Slim brigade and another Ansar al-Sharia compound.

"RESCUE BENGHAZI"

Thousands of Libyans had marched in Benghazi on Friday in support of democracy and against the Islamist militias that Washington blames for the assault on its consulate. Hundreds of Ansar al-Sharia supporters held their own protest.

Friday's "Rescue Benghazi day" demonstration called for the government to disband armed groups that have refused to give up their weapons since the NATO-backed revolution last year.

"It's obvious that this protest is against the militias. All of them should join the army or security forces as individuals, not as groups," student Ahmed Sanallah said. "Without that there will be no prosperity and no success for the new Libya."

Although the main demands of the marchers did not mention the attack on the U.S. consulate, it seems to have provided a strong impetus for the authorities to rally support behind the country's weak government.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was well liked, and many Libyans condemned the attack on the consulate despite being angered by the anti-Islamic U.S.-made film that triggered it.

Some protesters' placards read: "We demand justice for Stevens" and "Libya lost a friend." Others had mixed views.

"I am out today to defend Benghazi. Killing the ambassador is a completely separate thing," said 26-year-old Amjad Mohammed Hassan, a network engineer. "I don't give a damn about the killing of the ambassador because the Americans offended the Prophet. I am just here for Benghazi."

Benghazi, 1,000 km (600 miles) from Tripoli across largely empty desert, is controlled by various armed groups, including some comprised of Islamists who openly proclaim their hostility to democratic government and the West.

Some are identified by local people as being among those who were at the consulate protest last week. U.S. officials have described the violence as a "terrorist attack."

Abu Al-Qaa, a demonstrator at the Ansar al-Sharia demonstration, said Stevens had been "preparing for the entry of American troops into Libya."

"The will of the Prophet was to expel infidels from Muslim lands so that Muslims prevail. Terrorizing your enemy is one of Islam's tenets." He said he had fought U.S. troops in Iraq where he was arrested, sent back to Libya and jailed for three years.

One banner at the Ansar al-Sharia demonstration read: "Day to rescue Benghazi or day to rescue America?"

Red Sox end Orioles' six-game win streak

By HOWARD ULMAN

updated 5:43 p.m. ET Sept. 23, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles ended a successful road trip with a wasted opportunity to climb into a tie for the AL East lead.

When Ryan Flaherty struck out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning Sunday, the Red Sox had a 2-1 win and the Orioles headed home after going 6-3 on the journey to Oakland, Seattle and Boston.

"We needed this one. Obviously, going down to this last stretch every game is looked at as a must win," Adam Jones said. "We had a good road trip. We really, really wanted this one to finish off the road trip, but it happens."

The Orioles remained one game behind the New York Yankees and lead Oakland by one game for the top wild-card spot in the league. The Athletics beat the Yankees 5-4.

The Red Sox snapped a four-game losing streak - and ended the Orioles six-game winning streak - but are trying to finish out of the division cellar with their first losing record since 1997.

"Coming to Boston, take two out of three, I don't care what kind of team we're playing or how we're playing," Baltimore's Mark Reynolds said. "It's always big and we keep wining series and we'll see where we're at here in a week or two."

The Orioles almost completed a three-game sweep after Cody Ross doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth. They loaded the bases with one out against Andrew Bailey on a single by Reynolds, a ground-rule double by pinch-hitter Jim Thome and an intentional walk to Chris Davis. But Boston's closer got Manny Machado to ground into a forceout at home, then struck out Ryan Flaherty to nail down his sixth save in eight opportunities.

"I like to work fast, but sometimes I work too quickly and get ahead of myself," Bailey said. "Today I was able to slow myself down and make the pitches when I needed to."

The decisive run came in when Dustin Pedroia led off the eighth with a double against Luis Ayala (5-5) and Ross followed with his tiebreaking hit.

In the first inning, Ross reached over the short right field wall near Pesky's Pole in the corner to take a home run away from Jones.

"I didn't really know where I was, actually. I thought that the ball was in front of the pole after I had caught it," Ross said. "I ran in and somebody was like `You just robbed a home run.' I was like `I did? All right. Cool."'

Junichi Tazawa (1-1) pitched a perfect eighth before the Orioles rally fell short.

Baltimore dropped to 27-9 in one-run games.

Boston starter Felix Doubront struck out 11 in seven innings, including three each against Robert Andino and Reynolds. Andino returned after being hit in the helmet with a pitch on Friday night.

With the pitcher's mound in the sun and home plate in shadow until later in the game, hitters had a tough time picking up pitches, especially from a lefty.

"It was tough. Guys were trying sunglasses, no sunglasses, light lens, dark lens," Reynolds said. "Both teams were playing in the same conditions. It's probably why the score was 2-1."

Baltimore manager Buck Showalter thought plate umpire Al Porter's vision might not have been perfect either. He said Matt Wieters, who led off the ninth by grounding out, should have walked had Porter not called a pitch a strike.

"Wieters really walked and we would have scored a run," Showalter said, "but, unfortunately, we weren't the only ones having trouble seeing the baseball, it looks like."

After Ross drove in the go-ahead run, Brian Matusz retired Mauro Gomez on a fly ball before highly touted prospect Dylan Bundy made his major league debut with one out and retired both batters he faced on fly balls. Chosen fourth in last year' draft, the 19-year-old right-hander was 9-3 with a 2.08 ERA in the minors this year before being called up from Double-A Bowie on Wednesday.

"I was nervous at first," Bundy said. "I was hoping to get an inning, but getting those first two outs, that inspires me a little bit and, hopefully, the next time I won't be as nervous."

Doubront allowed one run on four hits with two walks in his second straight solid start after losing his previous five decisions.

The Red Sox scored the first run in the fourth when Ross led off with a single and took second on a walk to James Loney. With one out, Danny Valencia grounded to shortstop J.J. Hardy, who threw to second for the first out, but Andino's relay into the dirt eluded Reynolds at first base. Ross scored from second, sliding ahead of the attempted tag by Wieters.

Doubront held the Orioles hitless through four innings and gave up hits to the first three batters in the fifth. Lew Ford singled, took third on a double by Davis and scored on a single by Machado.

NOTES: After the game, the Red Sox held a postgame ceremony for Johnny Pesky, who died Aug. 13 at the age of 92 after a baseball career of more than 60 years. He played, managed and served as a broadcaster for the team. ... The Red Sox recalled OF Che-Hsuan Lin from Triple-A Pawtucket. ... John Lackey, on the disabled list all year following Tommy John elbow surgery, pitched two innings in a Red Sox intrasquad game in Fort Myers, Fla. He threw 26 pitches with three strikeouts, no hits and no walks. ... The Orioles return home to open a four-game series Monday with a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays. Steve Johnson (3-0) pitches for Baltimore against Henderson Alvarez (9-13) in the opener and Wei-Yin Chen (12-9) goes for the Orioles against Rickey Romero (8-14) in the nightcap. ... The Red Sox have a day off before opening their final home series of the season with the first of two games against the Tampa Bay Rays. Clay Buchholz (11-6) is scheduled to pitch for Boston against David Price (18-5).

How the cheetah got its stripes: A genetic tale

Friday, September 21, 2012

Feral cats in Northern California have enabled researchers to unlock the biological secret behind a rare, striped cheetah found only in sub-Saharan Africa, according to researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, Alabama. The study is the first to identify a molecular basis of coat patterning in mammals.

The scientists found that the two felines share a biological mechanism responsible for both the elegant stripes on the tabby cat and the cheetah's normally dappled coat. Dramatic changes to the normal patterns occur when this pathway is disrupted: The resulting house cat has swirled patches of color rather than orderly stripes, and the normally spotted cheetah sports thick, dark lines down its back.

"Mutation of a single gene causes stripes to become blotches, and spots to become stripes," said Greg Barsh, MD, PhD, emeritus professor of genetics and of pediatrics at Stanford and an investigator at the HudsonAlpha Institute.

The differences are so pronounced that biologists at first thought that cheetahs with the mutated gene belonged to an entirely different species. The rare animals became known as "king cheetahs," while affected tabby cats received the less-regal moniker of "blotched." (The more familiar, striped cat is known as a mackerel tabby.)

The study will be published Sept. 21 in Science. Christopher Kaelin, PhD, a senior scientist in the Barsh laboratory, is the co-first author; Xiao Xu PhD, from the National Cancer Institute-Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research and the Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology on Endangered Wildlife in Sichuan, China, is the other co-first author. Marilyn Menotti-Raymond, PhD, of NCI-Frederick is the senior author.

Barsh and his lab members have spent decades investigating how traditional laboratory animals such as mice develop specific coat colors. His previous work identified a variety of biologically important pathways that control more than just hair or skin color, and have been linked to brain degeneration, anemia and bone marrow failure. But laboratory mice don't display the pattern variation seen in many mammals.

"We were motivated by a basic question," said Barsh of the turn to the study of big (and little) cats. "How do periodic patterns like stripes and spots in mammals arise? What generates them? How are they maintained? What is their biological and evolutionary significance? It's kind of surprising how little is known. Until now, there's been no obvious biological explanation for cheetah spots or the stripes on tigers, zebras or even the ordinary house cat."

The research relied primarily on DNA samples from feral cats in Northern California captured for sterilization and release, on tissue samples provided by the City of Huntsville Animal Services group, and on small skin biopsies and blood samples from captive and wild South African and Namibian cheetahs. It also hinged on the recent availability of the whole-genome sequence of the domestic cat. (Menotti-Raymond's research focuses on the genomic analysis of the domestic cat to better understand many human diseases.)

"The Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institute has long championed the cat as an animal model of human disease," said Menotti-Raymond. "Studying color variation in cats provides the opportunity to uncover new principles of gene action and interaction that may have unexpected applications to understanding developmental and morphologic variation in natural populations, including humans."

Comparing gene sequences of feral cats with different patterns allowed Kaelin and Xu to identify mutations in a gene they dubbed Taqpep associated with the blotched tabby markings: 58 of 58 blotched tabbies had a mutation in each of its two copies of Taqpep, while 51 of 51 mackerel tabbies had a least one unmutated version.

Taqpep encodes a protease normally found in the cell membrane, but that can also be cleaved to allow it to diffuse outside the cell. This ability to float freely and interact with other molecules in the extracellular soup is a key component of a principle called reaction diffusion proposed by the famous computer scientist Alan Turing, PhD, in 1952 as a way to explain how periodic patterns (like stripes and spots) can arise out of randomness.

"Turing realized that, under specific conditions, diffusible 'activator' and 'inhibitor' molecules can self-organize into a variety of periodic patterns," said Barsh. "We are excited about the idea that Taqpep might be an entry point to understand if, and how, reaction-diffusion mechanisms can explain 'how the leopard got its spots.'"

After nailing down Taqpep's role in tabby stripes (and analyzing its sequence in more than 350 other cats of 24 distinct breeds), Kaelin wondered if it might play a similar role in generating and maintaining the spots on wild and captive cheetahs. He obtained blood samples from a king cheetah named Kgosi, a resident of a wildcat education and conservation program in Northern California, and found that Kgosi also had a mutation in Taqpep.

Kaelin next contacted Ann van Dyk, who maintains a cheetah conservation center in South Africa from which all captive king cheetahs, including Kgosi, originate. (Van Dyk was the first to learn, though meticulous breeding records, that the king cheetah pattern is due to a recessive genetic mutation.) Van Dyk obtained DNA samples from all her cheetahs, allowing confirmation that a Taqpep mutation is responsible for the king cheetah pattern.

Mammals aren't the only animals with patterned hair or skin, obviously. Fish, salamanders and some invertebrates also have stripes and spots. However, there is an essential difference. While the non-mammals simply add stripes or spots as they grow to adulthood, mammals keep the same number and pattern by increasing the surface area of the contrasting colors.

"Somehow, cells in the black stripes know they are in a black stripe and remember that fact throughout the organism's life," said Barsh. "We were curious about what's happening at the boundary between light and dark stripes and spots. How do these spots know to grow with an animal?"

When Kelly McGowan, MD, PhD, a senior scientist in Barsh's group, studied fetal cat skin after seven weeks of gestation, she found that the tabby pattern begins to arise only when the hair begins to grow. In other words, there are no apparent differences between the cells themselves ? only in the color of hair they produce. That suggested that the changes in color are due to differences in the levels of expression of certain genes within the cells.

Lewis Hong, a former graduate student in Barsh's lab, used a technique he developed called EDGE to identify changes in gene expression levels between black and yellow areas of cheetah skin (obtained under anesthesia). He found several differences, many associated with a pathway influencing the expression of a gene called Edn3. McGowan found that Edn3 mRNA was produced at the base of the follicles making the black hairs. To test their theory, the researchers collaborated with a group at Florida International University to study a yellow-colored laboratory mouse that had been engineered to express Edn3. The coats of the resulting animals were much darker than their unmodified peers.

"This is very strong evidence that Edn3 is a critical regulator of black versus yellow hair in animals," said Barsh. The researchers hypothesize that expression of Taqpep is required to establish a pattern of stripes or spots in early feline development that is then carried out by Edn3 as the hair grows.

Clearly, not all cats are patterned. In particular, some big adult cats like African lions and mountain lions are distinctive for their lack of color variation even though their cubs are striped. Furthermore, Taqpep mutations are surprisingly common in some non-striped domestic cat breeds like the Abyssinian and the Himalayan.

"We know there's a mutation that suppresses pattern formation in some cats," said Barsh. "We'd like to investigate that mechanism as well."

House bill allows taxpayers to donate to Treasury

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Feel your taxes are too low? House Republicans have devised a new convenient way for those worried about government red ink to donate more to the Treasury.

And in a dig at President Barack Obama and his favorite billionaire, they have named the bill the Buffett Rule Act after investor Warren Buffett, who has said that he and other wealthy people don't pay enough in taxes.

The legislation, approved in the House on Wednesday and heading for an uncertain fate in the Senate, creates a checkbox on tax forms allowing taxpayers to make donations above their normal tax liability for debt reduction.

The original Obama-backed Buffett Rule bill, which failed in the Senate last April, would have required top earners to pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes.

Obama "has used Warren Buffett as the poster-child for his class warfare scheme because Buffett complains that he doesn't pay enough in taxes," said bill sponsor Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La.

"The Buffett Rule Act is a common sense alternative to President Obama's divisive class warfare calls for higher taxes, and it allows Warren Buffett and others like him to voluntarily donate more of their money to pay down our national debt if that is what they're really interested in doing."

Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, top Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said there was "nothing wrong with this bill except the label." The bill, he said, has "zero to do with the Buffett rule. It has everything to do with the absolute refusal of Republicans to face the basic issue," the level of taxes that the wealthy pay.

The chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., said the bill offered a simple way for people concerned about the debt to contribute. Now, he said, people must either send a separate check or money order to the Bureau of Public Debt or go online to that website and use a credit card.

He cited Joint Committee of Taxation estimates that the bill would reduce the public debt by $135 million over 10 years.

Donations to pay down the national debt are tax deductible under current law.

The IRS already has a checkbox on its income tax form for making a $3 contribution to the presidential election campaign fund.

Compact body scanner ready for space station

53 min.

Handheld?"tricorders" from "Star Trek" remain just a science fiction fantasy for astronauts who need advanced medical care in space. But a new version of full-body scanning technology has the right size and power requirements to possibly fit aboard the International Space Station.

The smaller, cheaper version of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine could provide "slice" images of astronauts' bodies to improve studies of human health in space ? issues such as bone and muscle loss in low-gravity environments or the effects of deep-space radiation. Space explorers living on moon bases or traveling to Mars could also benefit from having such medical technology available during missions lasting for months or years.

"I would like to build a facility-class, whole-body-sized MRI," said Gordon Sarty, acting chairman of the biomedical engineering division at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. "Such a project would require an agreement between the ISS space agencies."

The compact MRI could weigh less than a ton ? one-twentieth of a ton for a smaller version that scans arms and legs ? and would require far less power than traditional MRI. Costs for the full-body MRI could drop from $2 million to as low as $200,000.

Sarty presented his team's compact MRI technology at AIAA Space 2012, a conference organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, on Sept. 13. He hopes to win funding from the Canadian Space Agency to launch the machine to the space station around 2020.

MRI machines work by using radiofrequency coils to broadcast signals to the human body and receive return signals to build an image of the body's innards. Gradient coils control the machine's magnetic field to produce the precise "slice" images of certain parts of the body.

But MRI technology has limits that would make it both difficult and risky to operate on the space station. Typical MRI machines weigh about 11 tons or more because they rely upon heavy superconducting magnets cooled by liquid helium, and also create stray magnetic fields that could interfere with the space station's operations. Another problem comes from the MRI gradient coils' need to consume huge amounts of power in short bursts. [8 Surprising High-Tech Uses for Helium]

"These characteristics make it impractical and potentially dangerous to take a conventional MRI into space," Sarty told InnovationNewsDaily.

Compact MRI uses two different technologies to get around such problems. First, it uses a permanent Halbach magnet that is lighter than the superconducting magnet and does not create stray magnetic fields outside the magnet. Second, the compact MRI eliminates the power-hungry gradient coils by using Transmit Array Spatial Encoding (TRASE) that encodes images through the radiofrequency coil alone.

The smaller MRI technology has many uses far beyond space ? it could improve overall medical care on Earth by making the cheaper machines available around the world. Its smaller size could also lead to easier use of MRIs in battlefield hospitals or distant parts of the world with limited space and power.

Many of the new technology's pieces have already fallen into place. Halbach magnets have shown they can create the required magnetic fields, and TRASE Coils have successfully created images inside a conventional MRI machine with the gradient coil fields switched off. Sarty's team has also created a full-size mock-up of the compact MRI.

Several of the space conference attendees urged Sarty to develop the Earth applications first before pushing use of the compact MRI in space. But Sarty hopes the Canadian Space Agency can take enough interest to fully fund the concept for testing in a space environment.

"Eventually someone will break a bone in space," Sarty said. "We have no idea if that bone will heal."

The process of setting up a website and obtaining it on the web generally is a tough one particular, specifically for the non-technical neighborhood. And this definitely isn't served by the typical misconception that domain registration and world wide web internet hosting is a single and the same issue.

So let us very clear items up. Domain registration and world wide web hosting are two separate procedures, the two of which should be concluded so as to make an internet site and ensure it is are living on the net.

Put merely the process is as follows: a domain need to be registered by a domain registration firm after which that domain brand need to be hosted on the net via a world wide web internet hosting organization.

And here's where the confusion is available in. Several businesses will provide each domain registration and internet internet hosting, while other people will only supply possibly internet internet hosting or domain registration. For that reason you are able to select to sign-up your domain and host your website using the exact same company or register your domain with a single firm and host your website with yet another.

It genuinely as simple as that, but is one thing that causes a good deal of confusion and unneeded tension to a lot of individuals seeking to set up a website.

By this we suggest.com,.co.uk,.org,.net etc. You need to give mindful consideration to the domain extension you end up picking to ensure that your entire domain title greatest represents that of one's enterprise or undertaking. For example should you certainly are a Uk business and so are only offering for the Uk, it could be best to select a.co.uk domain extension - particularly for obtaining very good Uk search engine rankings.

It's imperative that prior to registering a domain title by using a domain registrar that you check that they are a credible domain registration company. A single means of doing this can be to check that the domain registrar's site is highlighted to the ICANN (The web Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) Accredited Registrars listing

Internet hosting Once you've registered your special domain brand by having an accredited domain registrar, you'll want to get your internet site live on the net. To complete this, you'll want to buy a web hosting deal from the hosting company.

The operation of placing your web site on the net is completed by the net hosting business you indicator up with and may include inserting your website over a world wide web server that's then linked towards the web. The kind of net server your website is hosted on will rely around the needs of the website. One of the most typical web hosting programs are Shared Web Hosting and Focused Server Internet Internet hosting.

Shared World wide web Hosting If you have a easy website which requires a regular level of world wide web area and bandwidth, then it's most likely that the hosting company advise you choose a shared internet hosting strategy.

With this particular strategy your internet site will likely be put on among the net internet hosting business's shared net servers. Here your internet site will reside alongside numerous other equivalent sized web sites exactly where it will share each of the server's assets and features.

Every single internet hosting business differs in the internet hosting characteristics they supply with their shared internet hosting ideas. With numerous firms you are going to obtain as common:

- A specified level of internet room determined by your selected package deal - Easy to work with web website user interface - Online account management facility - Full 24/7 ftp entry to add your web files - Free domain transfer - Unlimited domain aliases - Webmail - Send and receive e-mail employing Microsoft Outlook or any other e mail packages

Dedicated Server World wide web Internet hosting When your website has grown to some dimensions which can not be accommodated on the shared server or if you require the versatility to add software program or any other features to your website, then your world wide web hosting firm could suggest which you acquire a devoted server.

With a dedicated server, you own the legal rights to the entire server; as a result providing you full management above what's put in and operate on your own server. Place and bandwidth utilization may even no longer be a problem as there'll only be your web site (or web sites) employing the servers methods.

By using a devoted server additionally you have peace of mind that your website(s) won't be on the mercy of other web sites as well as their probably corrupt code - which could lead to downtime and other troubles to the web site.

When picking a devoted server you'll be able to decide to own your server managed or unmanaged with the net internet hosting firm. Using a managed server, you may get solutions like website administration, particular computer software installation, servicing and updates. The most important furthermore of getting your devoted server managed is that you might have a specialist available ought to your server undergo any failure - guaranteeing your web site a higher uptime percentage. Even though significantly less expensive, unmanaged server hosting is only really encouraged for anyone using a higher diploma of technical understanding in server administration and management.

South Africa: Striking miners accept Lonmin offer

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Striking platinum miners in South Africa have accepted an agreement for higher wages with London-registered Lonmin PLC and plan to return to work Thursday, a mediator said of the bloody strike that lasted nearly six weeks and pulled in gold and chrome miners.

The deal reached Tuesday includes a 22 percent pay increase and a one-off payment of 2,000 rand ($250) to help cover the no-work, no-pay stoppage, according to Bishop Joe Seoka, a member of the negotiating team and head of the South African Council of Churches.

The strike that has hurt South Africa's vital mining sector began Aug. 10 and was marked by violence in which 45 people were killed. On Aug. 16 police opened fire on demonstrating strikers, killing 34 and wounding 78 in a display of state violence that shocked the nation.

About 5,000 strikers gathered in a stadium to listen to the deal and cheered and sang when they finally accepted the offer. They then formed a line and danced out of the stadium.

Seoka said he will go back to the negotiations with Lonmin management to finalize the deal Tuesday night.

"You have won as workers!" Seoka told the crowd. He said there will be further negotiations in October where they can discuss a further increase.

One worker held up a hand inscribed in black ink with the phrase "Mission Accomplished."

The strike highlighted poor wages and living and working conditions for most South African workers, the widening gap between rich and poor that makes the country the most unequal nation on Earth, and raised questions about President Jacob Zuma's leadership just as he prepares for a crucial governing party congress in December that will decide whether he gets another term as leader of Africa's richest economy.

Zuma said Monday that strikes have cost the country more than $500 million this year.

The Lonmin workers were the first to strike and in recent weeks seven other mines had work stoppages, including six platinum mines, one gold and one chrome mine.

Taiwan opposition wants premier sacked for economy

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? Taiwan's main opposition party on Tuesday called for the ouster of the island's premier and blamed the government for mismanaging the economy.

But analysts say there may be no quick fix for the economy unless the global recovery picks up steam.

The Democratic Progressive Party's push for a no-confidence vote in the legislature on Friday against Premier Sean Chen comes as Taiwan's economic growth shrank 0.2 percent in the April-June period, the first quarterly contraction since 2009.

The government expects the 2012 growth to be just above 1 percent, down from last year's 4 percent.

The vote is tentatively set for Friday but will unlikely be passed since the legislature is controlled by the ruling Nationalists. Still, the move could pressure the government into finding ways to boost the economy as exports ? the engine of growth ? have declined for months amid weakening foreign demand.

"The government has failed to handle the economy, nor does it feel people's pain," DPP lawmaker Ker Chien-ming said, adding Taiwanese are waiting to be lifted "out of their desperation."

Looking at its key economic indicators, Taiwan's problems may appear modest. Its jobless rate stood at 4.3 percent, down from over 6 percent in 2009 amid the global financial crisis. The government projects 2012 inflation at below 2 percent.

But even ruling party lawmakers have called attention to the poor employment picture, noting that many new college graduates failed to find jobs or took up low-paying manual work.

A graduate from an elite Taiwanese university grabbed headlines for taking up a job at a slaughterhouse in Australia because of the higher pay.

Taiwan's average monthly salary stands at 34,000 New Taiwan dollars ($1,150), unchanged from 1998, according to government figures.

Lawmakers say educated professionals such as engineers are leaving the island to find higher-paying jobs in places like Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China.

The Cabinet won some applause when it announced Monday that it will suspend a planned electricity rate hike ? the second in six months. The hike was meant to resolve the mounting debts of the state-run power company, which has long subsidized power bills.

The government hopes to attract Taiwanese investors to return from the mainland to set up factories at home. The government says it will provide incentives such as relaxing regulations regarding the hiring of cheaper foreign labor.

Yang Chia-yen, an economist with the Taiwan Institute for Economic Research, said that leading Taiwanese companies, such as iPhone-maker Foxconn Technology Group, are unlikely to shut down their immense mainland operations despite China's soaring labor costs over the past year.

"The whole supply chains have long moved to the mainland, and the big companies will likely speed up their automation there instead of moving back to Taiwan or elsewhere," Yang said.

Taiwanese have invested more than $120 billion in the mainland over the past three decades.

Mobile phones and wireless networks: No evidence of health risk found, Norwegian experts find

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? There is no scientific evidence that low-level electromagnetic field exposure from mobile phones and other transmitting devices causes adverse health effects, according to a report presented by a Norwegian Expert Committee. In addition, the Committee provides advice to authorities about risk management and regulatory practice.

The Committee has assessed the health hazards from low-level electromagnetic fields generated by radio transmitters. These electromagnetic fields are found around mobile phones, wireless phones and networks, mobile phone base stations, broadcasting transmitters and other communications equipment. The Committee has evaluated the power of the fields, whether they pose a health risk, the current regulatory practice, and whether the threshold limit values for exposure are observed.

The report is entitled "Svake h?yfrekvente elektromagnetiske felt -- en vurdering av helserisiko og forvaltningspraksis. FHI-rapport 2012:3" (In English: Low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic fields -- an assessment of health risks and evaluation of regulatory practice. NIPH report 2012:3). Published on September 13th, the report contains a Norwegian and English summary.

Studied electromagnetic fields below threshold limit values

The low-level electromagnetic fields generated when antennas in mobile phones and other wireless devices transmit radio signals are referred to as radiofrequency (RF) fields.

The health authorities have determined that the threshold limit values for electromagnetic fields around transmitters in mobile phones and other equipment should be the same as those recommended by the International Commission on Non-ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The threshold limit values are based on fields above a certain power that can cause harmful heating of tissue. The ICNIRP has not observed other adverse health effects under this level.

The threshold limit values for these fields are 50 times below the level that causes heating of human tissue or stimulation of nerve cells. Due to increasing public concerns, the government requested the appointment of an Expert Committee to assess whether such low-level electromagnetic fields could cause health effects.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health was commissioned to appoint the Expert Committee by the Ministry of Health and Care Services and the Ministry of Transport and Communication. The Committee was chaired by Professor Jan Alexander, Assistant Director-General at the Institute.

Research indicates no health risk

The Committee has assessed a number of possible health effects from low-level electromagnetic fields and has evaluated the research in each area.

The group found no evidence that the low-level fields around mobile phones and other transmitters increase the risk of cancer, impair male fertility, cause other reproductive damage or lead to other diseases and adverse health effects, such as changes to the endocrine and immune systems.

No cancer risk found

Most studies concerning cancer have focused on the risk of cancer in the head and neck. The Committee found no scientific evidence for an association between mobile phone use and fast-growing brain tumours. So far, the effect on slow-growing tumours has been studied in people who have used mobile phones for up to 20 years. These studies show no association.

Only limited data exist for the other types of cancer in the head and neck area, as well as for leukaemia and lymphoma, but so far there is no evidence of an increased risk from mobile phone use. Cancer registries have not observed an increase in these tumours in the population since mobile phones were introduced.

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity

The Committee did not find that mobile phones and other equipment can cause health problems such as electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

Does this mean that electromagnetic hypersensitivity is an imaginary problem? "We have no grounds to say that the symptoms are imaginary. But a large number of studies suggest that these symptoms must have other causes than the physical effects of low-level electromagnetic fields around mobile phones, wireless transmitters and other wireless equipment. Research provides no evidence to support that interventions help, such as reducing the use of mobile phones or wireless networks. Our opinion is that patients with these health problems must be taken seriously by the health service and should be treated as other patients. There is a need for greater expertise in the health service for this group of patients," says Alexander.

Many people have found that holding a mobile phone to the head causes the area around the ear to become hot -- is this due to electromagnetic radiation? "The skin warms up slightly due to heat from the battery and not from the radio transmitter in the phone. The electromagnetic field will have very little or no heating effect. The body will remove the heat through normal blood flow, in the same way as the body otherwise regulates temperature."

Some mobile phone models transmitting at maximum power provide exposure that comes close to the threshold limit values. Even so, any heating due to electromagnetic fields would be negligible.

Advice: Show general caution

Since there are no uncertainties in the health risk assessment of low-level electromagnetic fields that warrant introduction of the precautionary principle, the Committee believes that general caution is sufficient. This means that exposure should not be higher than needed to achieve the intended purpose.

When comparing the power of the fields around different types of equipment, talking on a mobile phone tops the list, whilst wireless internet networks are at the bottom. Base stations and broadcasting transmitters also come low down in the list. An example of exercising general caution would be for the authorities to inform that hands-free kits will significantly reduce exposure from mobile phones.

Furthermore, the field strength around a mobile phone is lower when there is good coverage.

Little benefit from more research

The Committee has evaluated the assessments previously published by international expert groups, as well as recent individual studies. The material is very extensive. A number of studies were performed on cells and tissues in the laboratory, as well as in animals and humans. In addition, population studies and cancer registry studies were conducted in several countries.

Little uncertainty

There is always an element of uncertainty in all risk assessments. In this case, the Committee considers the uncertainty to be small. Some uncertainty is associated with high exposure over time, such as extensive use of mobile phones over several decades. Until now, this has been impossible to study. Cancer registries should follow the development of cancer incidence in the future and research should not cease. Studies of animals that have been exposed throughout life provide no evidence that low level RF fields cause cancer. It is unlikely that long-term use of mobile phones will cause health risks that are unknown today.

Regarding equipment that provides the lowest exposure, such as base stations, wireless networks, broadcasting transmitters and proximity to other mobile phones, the experts believe that the risk assessment has negligible uncertainty. In other words, it is reasonably certain that such equipment is not associated with health risks.

The report is approximately 200 pages long and includes Norwegian and English summaries. It can be downloaded in PDF format at http://www.fhi.no.
