Afghan police: Student killed in university clash

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Sunni and Shiite students clashed at Kabul University on a Shiite holy day Saturday, and Afghan authorities say that one person was killed.

Gen. Mohammad Zahir, director of the criminal investigation division, said police were trying to assess why the fight that broke out in the afternoon, killing one student and wounding six others.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said Shia and Sunni students started fighting and by evening, several hundred more people joined the melee, fist-fighting and throwing stones at each other. He said eyewitnesses at the scene said the clash was related to Ashoura, the commemoration of the 7th century death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson.

Afghan leaders went to the site to try to calm the crowd. Abdul Azim Nurbakhsh, a spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, said late Saturday that classes at the university had been canceled for the next 10 days. Damage was reported to buildings at the university.

Other gatherings marking Ashoura in the Afghan capital were peaceful, but last year, a suicide bomber on foot struck worshippers at a Shiite shrine in Kabul, killing at least 80 people. Some Sunni extremists consider Shiite ceremonies to be heretical.

Separately, NATO said a service member with the international military coalition was killed Saturday in an insurgent attack in the south.

No other information was disclosed.

So far this year, 379 NATO service members have died in Afghanistan.

?You see me at the grocery store, and at your kid?s plays, and I sponsor the teams?in Redlands, that?s where the money should stay,? Eubanks said.

To them I say, read this post.

I lucked into the personal injury realm when I accepted a receptionist position at a small firm that handled personal injury and wrongful death cases more than a decade ago. At the time, I didn?t have any definitive career plans, and certainly didn?t view personal injury work as an area of passion. However, I did find the work interesting. Over time, it grew on me. Each client?s case was the same, yet different from all the rest. I viewed each client?s file as a story. Each one had its own cast of characters, complications, and facts. Little did I know that personal injury work would one day become my life?s work. I had no idea that fifteen years later, there isn?t anything else in the world that I?d rather be doing than what I do now ? handling personal injury and wrongful death cases alongside trial attorneys.

There isn?t a day that goes by that the importance of what I do is lost on me. Sure, there are certainly a few rare clients I?d rather forget, projects I?d rather not have, papers I?d rather not copy, and files that I?d prefer to drop into that rectangular receptacle sitting desk-side. Yet, there is something to be said for helping people at a time when they need it most.

I?ve had clients chat me up as they nervously anticipate their first round of spinal injections scheduled for the following Tuesday, spoken with those who were unsure how they would ever get over the loss of a beautiful and vibrant, young child tragically killed in a car accident, and talked with countless others who had no idea how they could possibly continue to walk through life with their permanent deficits, daily pain, and limited lifestyle after being hit and seriously injured by a drunk driver on the way to little Johnny?s soccer practice one afternoon.

I?ve stood beside hospital beds, and had clients speak directly to me over any of the suits standing in the room because they felt I understood them, and could relate to their personal plight better than any of the attorneys standing alongside me. I?ve visited clients? homes and glimpsed a bit of insight into their private worlds, where they eat, sleep, and live. I?ve fielded countless telephone calls from confused clients seeking answers to a multitude of questions ranging from what they should wear to a deposition, to how long settlements take, what happens at a mediation, why their discovery responses are important, whether insurance companies always fight this hard, and what to expect at trial.

I?ve taken calls from potential clients that had experienced such catastrophic losses that their words were muffled in a sea of tears, as they grievously wept while attempting to somehow articulate to me through a cloud of distorted words what had happened the day their world became one person smaller when they lost a child or spouse. I always mentally try to put myself in their shoes, finding it unimaginable how they even found the strength to get out of bed in the morning, much less anything else after suffering such a catastrophic and devastating loss.

I have looked at photographs no one else could bring themselves to look at due to their extremely graphic nature and emotionally jarring content because someone had to do it. And if it had to be someone ? why not me? I?ve viewed images of horrific things: human beings burned and charred beyond recognition as they sat trapped in the front seat their vehicle during a fiery car crash; a gentleman whose body was inadvertently pulled into a meat grinder while working at a factory, critically injured or deceased babies, and graphic autopsy photos illustrating precisely what it looks like after the coroner makes a large, butterfly incision across a grown man?s chest. If I could barely bring myself to look at those images, I wondered how in the world this client (or their family) could possibly make it through one more day of emotional torture, tremendous loss, and deep grief, much less all of the years to follow.

We help real people with real problems. We step in when insurance companies fail to extend reasonable offers, when facts are complicated or people need help navigating the complex legal landscape. We take cases to trial. We stand in the courtroom to ask a jury of peers to award our injured clients what they are entitled to. We hold our client?s virtual hands throughout the entire legal process. We answer questions. We provide guidance. We offer care, compassion and empathy to people when they need it most, often when they have encountered the ultimate low in life. We lift them up, help them along, encourage them, sooth them, address their each and every concern, and most importantly, represent their interests by giving a voice to their cause. We become an extension of them. We proudly represent them. We walk with them, talk with them, and at times, become like friends or family to them.

Whether you were rear-ended in a car accident, fell off of a third story balcony at a party, your little boy was bit by the neighbor?s vicious dog and is now missing three fingers and part of an ear or you were rear-ended at a high rate of speed by a 80,000 pound semi-tractor trailer on the interstate ? I?m your girl. In case you?re wondering if I?m interested in each client?s plight, the answer is yes. There?s no where I?d rather be. You bet it?s personal. You bring the file to my desk, and I will shake it down twelve ways to Sunday, and serve it up via a grand assortment of well-crafted memos, letters, pleadings, and when I?m feeling really crafty, perhaps even a few fancy charts, tables, and demonstrative exhibits. I will know that file better than anyone who didn?t actually live through it. I consider it a personal mission to make it an extension of myself. I take pride in what I do. I take pride in being an extension of another human being.

You better believe I will know all of the names of key players, who knows what, whom, and when, what time the sun rose that day, and how many seconds there were between the green light and the red light that forever altered our client?s life. I will arrive in the courtroom with every imaginable supply known to man. My attorneys will want for nothing. There will come a time when the opposing attorney will secretly wish he could steal my notepad and pen, as I sit there writing strategic notes to place in front of my attorney to slay each and every witness. I will be an extension of the client and my law firm on that day, and you better believe the job will be done with all of the poise, professionalism, and competence one would expect of a seasoned trial paralegal in a courtroom.

Perhaps you think helping injured people sounds boring, but let me as you this: What if that person on the way to that soccer game now laying in that hospital bed paralyzed who could never walk or work again a day in their life was your mother, sister, father, brother, wife, husband or child? How would you feel about it then? What if the insurance company they were dealing with wasn?t willing to pony up their measly $100,000 auto policy limits when your loved one had incurred over $150,000 in initial ER bills, and was left with permanent injuries from which they would never recover? You interested now? You bet I am.

What I do matters. When that file hits my desk ? it?s go time. It becomes a personal mission. I?ve had the privilege of getting to know many clients rather well. I can readily tell you their children?s names, personal hobbies, where they last went on vacation, what they did there, the list of activities they can no longer do each day, their sketchy history of cocaine abuse, and how their married sex lives will never be the same again. Sure, it?s not always pretty. The conversations aren?t always easy. There are certain things I?d rather not know or see or do on a particular file, but at the end of the day, if someone needs to take the call, hold the hand, view the unimaginable images or read deposition testimony armed with a yellow highlighter for so many mind-numbing, countless hours that their eyes might quite literally pop right out of their head ? you can sign me up for the Highlighting Championship, because me and that binder are going?all?the?way.

I?m all in.

When a client has a question or needs to better understand what is going on?they call me. When an attorney needs to know if something is inconsistent about a file?they ask me. When a client needs to promptly remove a Starbucks cup or Monster Energy drink off of the table and out of the jury?s sight following a brief trial recess?I?ll be the one to tell them. When you need one document out of a pile of six thousand pulled and on counsel?s table in a matter of seconds?I?ll find it. When the client is on the verge on an emotional breakdown?I?ll step in as a makeshift counselor. When you need someone who cares about that file and client more than anyone else could?it will be me.

Sure, what I do isn?t always fun, and it sure isn?t always pretty, but what I do matters. It matters to clients. It matters to me. I help change lives. What more could one do for a living?

So to those with the ambulance chaser mentality I say, ?You better watch those red lights closely.? You just never know when you might find yourself on the other end of the table, in need of someone who cares, listens sympathetically, answers questions, virtually holds your hand, and singlehandedly funds a highlighter factory.

Restaurant settles over 'carcass removal' listing

HELENA, Mont. (AP) ? A phone book company has settled a lawsuit over its placement of a Montana restaurant in the "Animal Carcass Removal" section of its yellow pages, a listing the restaurant owner says cost him customers and made him the butt of a Jay Leno joke.

The terms of the Nov. 16 deal between Dex Media Inc. and Big Sky Beverage Inc., the parent company of Bar 3 Bar-B-Q, were not disclosed. A tentative agreement proposed in September said a deal would include a payment to the restaurant owner.

Restaurant owner Hunter Lacey sued Dex after the listing appeared in the 2009 phone book and was reprinted in other print and online directories in 2010 and last year. It gained national notoriety after Leno featured it as a joke on the Tonight Show in January 2011.

Lacey's lawsuit claims a Dex salesman deliberately published the free listing under the "Animal Carcass Removal" section after he refused to buy an advertisement in the phone book. The salesman no longer works for the company.

Lacey claimed the negative publicity caused business to drop off at his Bozeman and Belgrade restaurants and his brand's reputation to suffer. His lawsuit alleged negligence, defamation and slander, among other charges.

Dex has said it was an erroneous listing the company removed from its online directory when it was discovered.

The case seemed to be headed for court after it was filed in U.S. District Court in September 2011. But settlement talks began in earnest after U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Strong denied a request to dismiss the case because of problems he saw with Dex's disclosure of company documents to Big Sky Beverage's attorney.

Strong took issue with the timing of Dex's release of audio recordings of the salesman's calls to Bar 3 Bar-B-Q and a company document without giving the other side adequate time to inspect them in preparation for questioning the salesman.

Attorneys for both sides told the judge less than two months later they had reached a tentative settlement, which was finalized this month.

Neither Lacey nor attorneys for Dex and Big Sky Beverage returned calls and emails seeking comment this week.

One Direction's 2nd CD hits No. 1, sells 540,000

NEW YORK (AP) ? One Direction's "Take Me Home" is the taking the boys to the top of the charts ? and to new heights.

The group's sophomore album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the year's third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift's "Red," which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons' "Babel," which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week.

"We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us," band member Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Tuesday from London. "We can send tweets and thank them, but 140 characters is never going be enough to say how much it means."

The album also debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom this week. The fivesome's debut, "Up All Night," came in at No. 2 in the United Kingdom last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit No. 1 and has achieved platinum status.

"We were a little bit nervous about how people were going to take it," 19-year-old Niall Horan said of the new album during tour rehearsals. "Everyone gets that second album syndrome."

They say though they're excited, they won't be celebrating too much: "We're finishing rehearsing soon and we're going home to bed."

One Direction, who placed third on the U.K. version of "The X Factor" in 2010, is managed by Simon Cowell. In just a year, the band has become worldwide sensations, thanks to its feverish fans. They released a book and have a Nickelodeon show and 3-D movie planned. They also made the cut for Barbara Walters' most fascinating people of 2012 list, which includes New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. gold medalist Gabby Douglas.

One Direction says those experiences have helped the group mature.

"We've been working hard. We're starting to grow up," Horan said. "We're still young, but we've passed the initial teenage years. ...We've grown up quite quick in the job we have to do and we became a lot more independent."

The group ? which includes Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson ? will launch a worldwide tour in February. They hope to work with Katy Perry and are still trying to adjust to the celebrity and fame that has taken over their lives.

"I can see how it gets to people. I guess it's quite easy to get wrapped up in it all," Styles said. "We do the same things every other lad our age does. We go out, we have fun, we meet girls and stuff like that. Sometimes it gets written about, which, yeah, we think about it and it's absolutely crazy. I?m told that the fans think he did a great job, and that he?s as associated with the role as Peter Cullen is with Optimus Prime, for example.

If that?s the case, then giving Feldman a part in the upcoming Ninja Turtles picture could push against the general sense of fan unease that has greeted every new leak or piece of official info about the film.

Ever since producer Michael Bay revealed the new alien origins planned for the ?heroes in a halfshell,? the ?base have been up in arms. We then discovered that they won?t be teenagers either, and the foaming continued. Bay and co. should be desperate to turn this tide.

This bit of casting could really help them. It could be another Cullen-as-movie-Optimus moment.

So will it happen? Well, Feldman has told Movieweb that he?s been in ?communications? with Bay.?He said:

It?s kind of up in the air. I will say this much. Michael Bay and I have become social acquaintances. We have traded cell phone numbers. We have been in communication. I have let him know that I support the project. He has let me know that he is a fan of my work. Its kind of? we are communicating. I wouldn?t say there has been a formal offer, or anything like that. Its not even really going to be Michael Bay?s decision. It?s going to be the director of the film?s decision.

It?s an amusing quote because it sounds like there?s nothing to it at all until Feldman started talking about what hasn?t happened. ?I wouldn?t say there has been a formal offer? sounds so much more convincing than ?we have traded cell phone numbers.?

I suggest all other actors learn that as a technique and start putting it to work in generating some self publicity. ?I wouldn?t say that I?ve actually signed on for the role? seems to be the ideal manifestation of this trick.

Of course, Feldman and Bay might truly, honestly be best friends forever and the casting still not come to pass for whatever reason ? though I, personally, doubt it will be Jonathan Liebesman, the film?s director, who actually makes the casting decisions on this film.

And if this really will be the motion capture production we?re expecting, it seems a little less likely that there will be a separate performer for Donatello?s voice.?I guess they could get Feldman in to play the role on set. Perhaps. It?s not like they?re going to cast actual martial artists anyhow ? that element is bound to come down to fakery.

Last we heard about Ninja Turtles, pre-production had shut down but was expected to get rolling again once the studio considered the screenplay and budget more cost-effective. If that has happened already, it has happened on the quiet.

Incidentally, Movieweb have started a petition, not just for Corey Feldman?s casting, but to see the other three turtle roles cast the way they?d like it.

Which quite unexpectedly means giving the roles to?Blake Anderson,?Adam DeVine?and?Anders Holm?of Workaholics, a TV show I?ve read a little about but haven?t seen so much of one second of.

"I believe they make amazing companions, but they are different than cats or dogs," said Susie Coston of Watkins Glen, N.Y. For one thing, turkeys get too hot and are too messy to come indoors, said Coston, the national shelter director for the Farm Sanctuary.

Taking the large bird on as a companion requires more responsibilities than owning a dog or a cat, experts say. "If people are adopting domesticated turkeys, they should be aware that it's not a simple endeavor and would take a considerable amount of work," said NTF spokeswoman Kimmon Williams.

"Turkeys as pets is a complicated question," she added.

Like other animals that serve as companions to humans, turkeys come in different breeds, with some weighing as much as 60 pounds, Williams said. Every turkey has its own personality ? and some can be aggressive, she said.

Most pet turkey owners agree the birds aren't the kind of pets that can be walked on a leash or dressed for the Christmas family photo.

Coston said, for instance, that she wouldn't sleep with her turkey "like I do my dogs and cats. But I don't love dogs more than I do pigs or dogs and cats more than chickens and turkeys. I have a different relationship with each of them."

"Turkeys are inherently nervous and do not tend to be warm and cuddly. Turkeys also need plenty of space to run around in and be fed the appropriate diet," Williams noted.

Still, Karen Oeh, who will be getting four pet turkeys just before Thanksgiving, said she preferred them over dogs.

"Dogs are needy to me. They need affection, attention, security, they always need you to do something for them. With the turkeys, I don't feel guilty because I didn't take them to the park and throw the Frisbee," said the Ben Lomond, Calif., resident.

Despite their differences, turkeys and traditional pets share traits such as the ability to love unconditionally, loyalty and intelligence, owners said. Dr. Drucilla Roberts, a pathologist from Millis, Mass., pointed out a bonus: "They give us manure and eggs."

"I was always told that turkeys were the dumbest of farm animals. But that's not true. They know us and protect us. If a stranger comes, the turkey is right in his face and clucking and raising its feathers. They make great noises," Roberts said.

Like dogs, some turkeys grow attached to their owners. Oeh recounted how her last turkey, Ariala, followed her around the garden.

"She would stay by my right leg. When I was picking vegetables, she ate out of my hand. She let me pet her and kiss her," Oeh said, adding that petting turkeys can put them into a trance-like state. "She was so immersed in the moment that if you got tired of petting her and moved away, she'd wake up and look around as if to say `What's going on?'"

The part-time teacher and student services coordinator had to put Ariala to sleep last year due to her health problems, for which Oeh discovered a lack of available information. Through trial and error, she learned that it's hard to give a turkey a pill or take them on trips, because crating them requires giving them bear hugs to keep their wings from flapping.

Experts and owners, however, are aware of at least one problem: owing to their large breasts, commercial turkeys have little balance and can fall easily. One of Roberts' turkeys, Turks, had to be put down after its weight caused a split sternum, she said.

Commercial turkeys are usually the ones that get adopted as pets: Coston said most turkeys rescued by the Farm Sanctuary come from factory farms and have been debeaked, detoed and fattened. Many arrive as victims of neglect, cruelty or hoarding; they fall off farm trucks; or they mysteriously show up in boxes on doorsteps, she said.

The sanctuary, which has locations in California and in New York, places about 50 turkeys a year and has found homes for more than 1,500 birds since it started 26 years ago, Coston said. Hundreds of other birds, including the weakest or those with special needs are not adopted out because the rescues can deal with their problems easier than adopters can, Coston said.

Such sanctuaries are the final stop for the most well-known turkeys to escape the dinner table: the annual National Thanksgiving Turkey (and an understudy), who are pardoned the night before the holiday. After much fanfare and a White House ceremony, this year's turkeys will live on George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, with last year's birds, Liberty and Peace.

Karen Dawn, an author from Los Angeles, gets two turkeys every year and socializes them before they move on. This year's birds are going to live in Malibu.

They arrive stinky, so she gives them a bath and blow dry. "They relax like this is the best day they have had so far," said Dawn, who wrote "Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way We Treat Animals."

Turkeys make great outdoor pets and "make better pets than other birds that you have to keep in a cage indoors," she said.

Dawn said her two 20-pound turkeys will be at her Thanksgiving dinner ? but as guests. Rosie and Martha will greet two dozen human guests in the garden and watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, while Dawn serves up Wild Turkey bourbon ? and tofurkey.

FDA approves novel Novartis seasonal flu vaccine

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it approved a seasonal flu vaccine produced by Novartis using animal cell culture rather than the traditional manufacturing using chicken eggs - a speedier process that could help build stockpiles in the event of a pandemic.

The vaccine, to be sold by the Swiss drugmaker under the brand name Flucelvax, is approved to prevent season influenza in people aged 18 and over, the agency said.

To produce Flucelvax, virus strains for the vaccine are grown in animal cell cultures derived from mammals instead of in chicken eggs. Similar cell culture technology has long been used to produce other types of vaccines, FDA said.

"Today's approval represents the culmination of efforts to develop a seasonal influenza vaccine using cell culture as an alternative to the egg-based process," Karen Midthun, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

Using cell cultures rather than chicken eggs allows for a faster start-up of the vaccine manufacturing process in the event of a health crisis, such as a flu pandemic. Traditional flu vaccine production requires a tremendous number of fertilized chicken eggs to grow virus strains and often takes several months before it is ready to be delivered to physicians or pharmacies.

The cell-based process also enables manufacturers to maintain a supply of readily available, previously tested cells for use in vaccine production.

"Modern cell-culture technology will likely become the new standard for influenza vaccine production," predicted Andrin Oswald, head of Novartis' vaccines and diagnostics division.

Flucelvax will eventually be manufactured at a new U.S. plant in Holly Springs, North Carolina, once that facility is ready for full-scale commercial production, Novartis said.

The production takes place in a sterile, controlled environment, which significantly reduces the risk of potential impurities, the company said.

In clinical trials, Flucelvax was 83.8 percent effective in preventing flu when compared with a placebo.

A limited supply of the new vaccine will be available for this year's flu season, Novartis spokeswoman Liz Power said.

Novartis supplies the United States with about 30 million doses of flu vaccine annually, she said.

Last week, a very bright, hard-working and bright-eyed new entrepreneur came up to me and asked me point blank: so what?s the difference between marketing and branding? I was caught off guard for a moment but then realized that despite the inundation of experts telling small business owners and newbie startup founders that they must have a solid marketing and branding strategy, very few of us actually know what the difference is.

To start off, your brand is your company?s long-term identity. It?s what will make your company stand out in that sea of bright lights ? the swarm of other competitors trying to get your customers. Reputation, naturally, is central to your brand. Think of how BP?s reputation changed after the Gulf Coast debacle in 2006 and how it deeply and negatively altered its brand. ?Now think of how BP has tried to rebuild its reputation, its brand, by starting an initiative to promote tourism along the Gulf Coast and to restore the environment in that region. Brands can be changed, for the better or worse. The strength of your brand represents how much your target customer trusts you to provide them with value.

Marketing on the other hand, is all the activities ? promotions, events, advertisements, social media, public relations etc. that you?re doing to craft your brand and build the level of trust adequate to convince customers of the value you?re offering.

2. Strategize: You and your uncle sit down to plan out your marketing strategy. You make a list of things to do in order to vamp up your brand: new packaging, start selling at upscale distributors and markets, offer to give local restaurants samples to try out, maybe reach out to a local news station and ask them to do a cooking segment where your Uncle?s salt is featured as an ingredient.

3. Implement: Follow the steps in your marketing strategy but make sure not to over reach your goals. ?Also make sure you establish goals and timelines to track your progress. As you hit ?low-hanging-fruit? (setting up a stand at the local farmer?s market), aim for bigger marketing goals (getting a celebrity chef to test drive your salt and do a video interview that you can post up on your social media).

4. Reiterate: Marketing strategies change often and sometimes without notice. Your brand may actually change without your control or foresight and if it?s in a positive direction, think about incorporating the changes into your brand. For example, let?s say after months of marketing your gourmet salt, a local holistic practitioner realizes that the salt is great for soothing baths. This may be an added plus to your brand since you can now market your salt products for all types of uses, from cooking to healthcare.

European finance ministers will try to plug a 15 billion-euro ($19 billion) hole in Greece?s finances and win over the International Monetary Fund in the latest installment of three years of debt-crisis brinkmanship.

Recycling European Central Bank profits on Greek bonds, charging Greece lower interest rates and extending repayment deadlines are among the options under consideration today for filling the new gap in Greece?s public accounts.

European governments tore open the hole last week, by giving Greece two extra years to cut its budget deficit. The required extra financing provoked a clash with the IMF, since it would add to Greece?s debt load instead of reducing it.

?Greece is in a mess,? James Mirrlees, a Nobel economics laureate, told Bloomberg Television yesterday. Europe won?t solve the problem by ?fiddling around with little bits of extra bailout and allowing them to go a bit slower.?

Officials said today?s meeting, starting at 5 p.m. in Brussels, won?t make a final decision to release the next tranche of aid to Greece, partly because parliaments in Germany, the Netherlands and Finland have yet to weigh in.

The ?troika? representing creditors also has to certify that Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras?s coalition government has delivered economy-boosting steps ranging from improvements to tax collection to the deregulation of closed professions.

The meeting comes a day after France lost its top credit rating with Moody?s Investors Service, increasing pressure on President Francois Hollande to find ways to bolster growth in Europe?s second-largest economy.

Euro Falls

France was cut to Aa1 from Aaa, the rating company said. The Moody?s downgrade follows one by Standard & Poor?s in January.

The euro slid versus most of its 16 major counterparts after the Moody?s action renewed concern the currency bloc?s debt crisis is deepening. The 17-nation euro dropped 0.2 percent to $1.2783 as of 9:29 a.m. in Tokyo, and lost 0.3 percent to 103.99 yen.

Greek bonds gained for a seventh day yesterday amid expectations that creditors will keep money flowing to the Athens government. The yield on 10-year Greek notes fell 25 basis points to 17.22 percent.

One option is to deliver about 44 billion euros to Greece in December, by bundling 31.5 billion euros on hold since mid- year with two other tranches due before year-end, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said after the ministers failed to finalize the financing last week.

Paris Meeting

Finance officials from Germany, France, Spain and Italy met yesterday in Paris to overcome differences. Spokesmen for the four finance ministries declined to comment on the meeting, which was also attended by European Union Economic and Monetary Commissioner Olli Rehn.

Last week?s decision to grant Greece two extra years, to 2014, to cut its deficit to 2 percent of gross domestic product without offering debt relief stirred tensions with the IMF, provider of about a third of 148.6 billion euros in loans funneled to Greece since 2010.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, gearing up for a campaign for a third term next year, has ruled out writing off a portion of Greece?s debt. Dutch and Finnish leaders have told their bailout-weary voters the same thing.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, who began the crisis as French finance minister, sparred publicly with the chairman of the euro meeting, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean- Claude Juncker, over the European inability or refusal to bring down Greece?s debt burden.

?We clearly have different views,? Lagarde said at a joint briefing with Juncker after the Nov. 12 crisis meeting.

Deadline Extended

The trigger was a decision by the ministers to extend by two years, until 2022, a deadline for paring Greece?s debt to 120 percent of GDP. The debt load is set to peak at 190 percent of GDP in 2014, according to the troika, made up of the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission.

Lagarde, who cut short a trip to southeast Asia to return to Brussels for today?s talks, declined to say whether the IMF would budge on the debt target. In an interview in Manila, she said the IMF?s credibility is at stake in pursuit of ?a solid program for Greece that convinces investors today that it will stand tomorrow.?

Plugging the financing gap through 2014 is easier than demonstrating to the IMF that Greek debt is on a glidepath to ?sustainability,? officials said. Greece?s loan rates have been lowered and repayment schedules lengthened twice before, and no one has publicly contested doing so again.

Tapping Profits

Finance ministers are also considering how to tap profits made by the ECB and national central banks on Greek bonds, drawing on a February commitment to recycle that money back to Greece. The question of how to treat future ECB profits also has to be addressed.

The central bank is sitting on 208.5 billion euros of bonds of debt-hit governments that it started buying in May 2010 in a controversial program that contributed to the resignation of two Germans from its policy council. While the purchases were halted in March, ECB President Mario Draghi has sketched out a new bond-buying program that would only benefit countries that meet strict conditions.

Asked if unrealized ECB profits on Greek bonds held to maturity could be eventually earmarked for paying off Greek debts, Finnish Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen said in an interview in Helsinki yesterday: ?There are different proposals on the table, of which this is one. We?ll have to see how it looks like as a whole.?

NHL labor talks resume for 1st time in 8 days

NEW YORK (AP) ? If the first bargaining session in eight days between the NHL and the players' association made any headway, neither side tipped its hand.

A large contingent of players got together with league leadership on Monday night and met for under two hours.

Not a whole lot was accomplished on the road to a new agreement that could get the hockey season going, but at least there was optimism that the sides would get together again ? likely as soon as Tuesday.

"We talked about various things," union executive director Donald Fehr said on a chilly Manhattan sidewalk outside the NHL office. "No new proposals were made, they were not expected to be made. We had hoped to engage them in a discussion about the player contracting issues that are so important to the players. At least tonight they were unwilling to do that."

The league contends that it is waiting for the players to present a full proposal on all the major issues ? including core economics and player contracting, which deals with the entry-level system, arbitration and free agency. After the request was made, the players' association asked for a break and the meeting adjourned soon after.

"We've never heard a full proposal from them," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "They have given us a variation of the same proposal on economics a couple of times and there was no change in that position. They are still suggesting that they are moving in our direction on economics, but until we know exactly what their position is on economics now, we think it's all tied together and would like to hear it all together.

"It's our position that we've made a couple comprehensive proposals in a row. We'd like to know where they are on all of the issues. We asked that they put together a comprehensive proposal for us to consider."

Union representatives, along with 18 players who were in attendance, returned to the players' association office to have further internal discussions Monday night.

The sides agreed to get back in touch on Tuesday morning, and the feeling on both ends was that it likely would lead to another face-to-face meeting.

"It's certainly a good possibility of it. I would say it's more likely than not," Fehr said.

The players wanted to put focus on the player-contract issues on Monday night before returning to specific revenue and economic areas, but the NHL wasn't interested in that because the league considers everything to be intertwined.

Neither side wants to agree to anything, or make concessions in one single area, without knowing how those will affect other parts of the CBA that still need to be negotiated.

"Our position all along has been on the player contracting issues that they become considerably more important to players as the cap becomes limited," Fehr said. "We made proposals in a couple of areas in this regard, which moved toward them, but we wanted to talk about the rest of these to see where we were. We indicated to them the last time we met and again today that if we put aside for a moment the effect of the lockout on revenues ? we didn't think we were too far apart on the share ? and if that was right we can back into a discussion on the revenues. We wanted to know where we were on the player contracting stuff first, and they were unwilling to do that ? at least tonight."

Fehr said the NHLPA would consider the NHL's request for a full proposal, and try to figure out what the next step will be. No one would say if they thought such an offer could come on Tuesday.

Whether hockey will return soon, or at all this season, is still to be determined. The lockout entered its 65th day on Monday and has already wiped out 327 games. More cancellations could be coming soon, but the NHL hasn't said when another such announcement might be coming.

"I think every week is important in the process," Daly said. "I don't attach a particular significance to this week over last week or next week. I want to play tomorrow."

After turning down a suggestion from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to take a two-week break from negotiations, the union requested another meeting with the league. Monday night's meeting was scheduled on Saturday.

"We could've taken a couple of weeks off, I suppose," Fehr said. "It's hard for me to see how you make an agreement if you aren't talking, so you talk. Sometimes it doesn't lead anywhere, and perhaps very often it doesn't lead anywhere, but if you aren't talking it's 100 percent sure it doesn't lead anywhere.

"They were willing to have the meeting if we said we wanted to meet. That is about as far as I can go."

Daly said the NHL is always willing to listen if the players have something meaningful to say.

"We're never going to shut down the process," he said. "If they think there is a reason to meet and we can make progress, we're happy to meet. That's what we told them and that's what led to today's meeting."

It was the first bargaining session between the sides since Nov. 11, when a busy week of negotiating wrapped up with a session that lasted just over an hour and didn't produce any results. All games through Nov. 30 and the New Year's Day Winter Classic have been called off.

One area in which the NHL hasn't budged off its position is in the area of guaranteed dollars to players.

"If their proposal continues to be a guaranteed amount of player-share dollars, we have told them that that is not a proposal that is acceptable to us or would ever to be acceptable to our owners right now," Daly said. "If that continues to be where we are, we are a long way apart."

Frustration is building on both sides, and it has spilled over in recent days. The NHL has placed a gag order on its personnel throughout the league, but players are free to speak out, and are welcome to attend any bargaining sessions.

The latest verbal shot toward Bettman and Daly came on Monday when Florida Panthers forward Kris Versteeg was interviewed on a Toronto radio station.

"You've got to look for the cancers and you've got to cut out the cancers," Versteeg said during the interview. "I think when you look at Bill Daly and Gary Bettman, they've been looting this game for far too long."

Those remarks came on the heels of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Ian While, referring to the commissioner as an "idiot."

Daly publicly brushed aside the comments and chalked them up to frustration that is being felt on both sides of the lockout.

"I don't think either Gary or I take those personally," Daly said. "I understand there is a lot of frustration in this process. I'm frustrated in terms of being where we are and not playing hockey. I think that's just human nature."

Judge plans to deny bid for park Nativity displays

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A federal judge indicated Monday that she planned to deny a bid by churches to force Santa Monica to reopen spaces in a city park to private displays, including Christmas Nativity scenes.

U.S. District Court Judge Audrey Collins announced her intent in a tentative ruling given to attorneys in advance of a late-morning hearing.

William Becker, an attorney representing a group of Christian churches, said he will appeal.

Christmas Nativity scenes had been erected in Palisades Park for decades. Last year, atheists overwhelmed the city's auction process for display sites, winning most of the slots and triggering a bitter dispute.

Santa Monica officials snuffed the city's holiday tradition this year rather than referee the religious rumble, prompting churches that have set up a 14-scene Christian diorama to sue over freedom of speech claims.

"It's a sad, sad commentary on the attitudes of the day that a nearly 60-year-old Christmas tradition is now having to hunt for a home, something like our savior had to hunt for a place to be born because the world was not interested," Hunter Jameson, head of the nonprofit Santa Monica Nativity Scene Committee, said in advance of the hearing.

The atheists were not parties to the legal case. Their role outside court highlights a tactical shift as atheists evolve into a vocal minority eager to get their non-beliefs into the public square as never before.

National atheist groups earlier this year took out full-page newspaper ads and hundreds of TV spots in response to Catholic bishops' activism around women's health care issues and are gearing up to battle for their own space alongside public Christmas displays in small towns across America this season.

"In recent years, the tactic of many in the atheist community has been, if you can't beat them, join them," said Charles Haynes, a senior scholar at the First Amendment Center and director of the Newseum's Religious Freedom Education Project in Washington. "If these church groups insist that these public spaces are going to be dominated by a Christian message, we'll just get in the game ? and that changes everything."

In the past, atheists primarily fought to uphold the separation of church and state through the courts. The change underscores the conviction held by many nonbelievers that their views are gaining a foothold, especially among young adults.

The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life released a study last month that found 20 percent of Americans say they have no religious affiliation, an increase from 15 percent in the past five years. Atheists took heart from the report, although Pew researchers stressed that the category also encompassed majorities of people who said they believed in God but had no ties with organized religion and people who consider themselves "spiritual" but not "religious."

"We're at the bottom of the totem pole socially, but we have muscle and we're flexing it," said Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation. "Ignore our numbers at your peril."

The trouble in Santa Monica began three years ago, when atheist Damon Vix applied for and was granted a booth in Palisades Park alongside the story of Jesus Christ's birth, from Mary's visit from the Angel Gabriel to the traditional cr?che.

Vix hung a simple sign that quoted Thomas Jefferson: "Religions are all alike -- founded on fables and mythologies." The other side read "Happy Solstice." He repeated the display the following year but then upped the stakes significantly.

In 2011, Vix recruited 10 others to inundate the city with applications for tongue-in-cheek displays such as a homage to the "Pastafarian religion," which would include an artistic representation of the great Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The secular coalition won 18 of 21 spaces. Two others went to the traditional Christmas displays and one to a Hanukkah display.

The atheists used half their spaces, displaying signs such as one that showed pictures of Poseidon, Jesus, Santa Claus and the devil and said: "37 million Americans know myths when they see them. What myths do you see?"

Most of the signs were vandalized and in the ensuing uproar, the city effectively ended a tradition that began in 1953 and earned Santa Monica one of its nicknames, the City of the Christmas Story.

The Santa Monica Nativity Scenes Committee argues in its lawsuit that atheists have the right to protest, but that freedom doesn't trump the Christians' right to free speech.

"If they want to hold an opposing viewpoint about the celebration of Christmas, they're free to do that ? but they can't interfere with our right to engage in religious speech in a traditional public forum," said attorney Becker. "Our goal is to preserve the tradition in Santa Monica and to keep Christmas alive."

The city doesn't prohibit churches from caroling in the park, handing out literature or even staging a play about the birth of Jesus, and churches can always set up a nativity on private land, Deputy City Attorney Jeanette Schachtner said in an email.

The decision to ban the displays also saves the city, which had administered the cumbersome lottery process used to award booths, both time and money while preserving the park's aesthetics, she said.

For his part, Vix is surprised ? and slightly amused ? at the legal battle spawned by his solitary act but doesn't plan anything further.

"That was such a unique and blatant example of the violation of the First Amendment that I felt I had to act," said the 44-year-old set builder. "If I had another goal, it would be to remove the 'under God' phrase from the Pledge of Allegiance ? but that's a little too big for me to take on for right now."

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and religion, but also states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." That has been interpreted by courts as providing for separation of church and state, barring government bodies from promoting, endorsing or funding religion or religious institutions.

I wouldn't overlook a nicked feeder wire to the garage (especially if you used metallic conduit) or a bad connection (are they all real tight?) in either breaker box or where you spliced into the line. You did use "split bolts' to hook the #2 and #4 wires together, right? Got them all taped up real good and not jammed 10 pounds in a 5 pound bag kind of thing?

Could moisture/water got into your underground conduit?

Can you see all the original wiring the electrician did? Don't discount that there is a problem there somewhere.
A hundred amp short isn't something to ignore. Be careful!!!

Not that it is going to cause your problem, unless there is something else drastically wrong, but make sure the neutral and ground are not bonded together in the shop sub panel.

Worst case, disconnect the connections you made from the underground feeder and what the electrician originally ran. If you have the same problem you have narrowed your scope down.

Scientists selectively repress immune system: New treatment to combat autoimmune disease in mouse model

ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2012) ? In a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health have developed innovative technology to selectively inhibit the part of the immune system responsible for attacking myelin -- the insulating material that encases nerve fibers and facilitates electrical communication between brain cells.

Autoimmune disorders occur when T-cells -- a type of white blood cell within the immune system -- mistake the body's own tissues for a foreign substance and attack them. Current treatment for autoimmune disorders involves the use of immunosuppressant drugs which tamp down the overall activity of the immune system. However, these medications leave patients susceptible to infections and increase their risk of cancer as the immune system's normal ability to identify and destroy aberrant cells within the body is compromised.

Supported by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) at NIH, Drs. Stephen Miller and Lonnie Shea at Northwestern University, Evanston, teamed up with researchers at the University of Sydney, and the Myelin Repair Foundation in Saratoga, Calif. to come up with a novel way of repressing only the part of the immune system that causes autoimmune disorders while leaving the rest of the system intact.

The new research takes advantage of a natural safeguard employed by the body to prevent autoreactive T-cells -- which recognize and have the potential to attack the body's healthy tissues -- from becoming active. They report their results in the Nov. 18 online edition of Nature Biotechnology.

"We're trying to do something that interfaces with the natural processes in the body," said Shea. "The body has natural mechanisms for shutting down an immune response that is inappropriate, and we're really just looking to tap into that."

One of these natural mechanisms involves the ongoing clearance of apoptotic, or dying, cells from the body. When a cell dies, it releases chemicals that attract specific cells of the immune system called macrophages. These macrophages gobble up the dying cell and deliver it to the spleen where it presents self-antigens -- tiny portions of proteins from the dying cell -- to a pool of T-cells. In order to prevent autoreactive T-cells from being activated, macrophages initiate the repression of any T-cells capable of binding to the self-antigens.

Dr. Miller was the first to demonstrate that by coupling a specific self-antigen such as myelin to apoptotic cells, one could tap into this natural mechanism to suppress T-cells that would normally attack the myelin. The lab spent decades demonstrating that they could generate antigen-specific immune suppression in various animal models of autoimmune diseases. Recently, they initiated a preliminary clinical trial with collaborators in Germany to test the safety of injecting the antigen-bound apoptotic cells into patients with MS. While the trial successfully demonstrated that the injections were safe, it also highlighted a key problem with using cells as a vehicle for antigen delivery:

"Cellular therapy is extremely expensive as it needs to be carried out in a large medical center that has the capability to isolate patient's white blood cells under sterile conditions and to re-infuse those antigen-coupled cells back into the patients," said Miller. "It's a costly, difficult, and time-consuming procedure."

Thus began a collaboration with Dr. Shea, a bioengineer at Northwestern University, to discuss the possibility of developing a surrogate for the apoptotic cells. After trying out various formulations, his lab successfully linked the desired antigens to microscopic, biodegradable particles which they predicted would be taken up by circulating macrophages similar to apoptotic cells.

Much to their amazement, when tested by the Miller lab, the antigen-bound particles were just as good, if not better, at inducing T-cell tolerance in animal models of autoimmune disorders.

Using their myelin-bound particles, the researchers were able to both prevent the initiation of MS in their mouse model as well as inhibit its progression when injected immediately following the first sign of clinical symptoms.

The research team is now hoping to begin phase I clinical trials using this new technology. The material that makes up the particles has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is currently used in resorbable sutures as well as in clinical trials to deliver anti-cancer agents. Miller believes that the proven safety record of these particles along with their ability to be easily produced using good manufacturing practices will make it easier to translate their discovery into clinical use.

"I think we've come up with a very potent way to induce tolerance that can be easily translated into clinical practice. We're doing everything we can now to take this forward," said Miller.

In addition to its potential use for the treatment of MS, the researchers have shown in the lab that their therapy can induce tolerance for other autoimmune diseases such as type I diabetes and specific food allergies. They also speculate that transplant patients could benefit from the treatment which has the potential to retract the body's natural immune response against a transplanted organ. Dr. Christine Kelley, NIBIB director of the Division of Science and Technology, points to the unique collaboration between scientists and engineers that made this advance a reality.

"This discovery is testimony to the importance of multidisciplinary research efforts in healthcare," said Kelley. "The combined expertise of these immunology and bioengineering researchers has resulted in a valuable new perspective on treating autoimmune disorders."
