Chevron expects to post lower 3Q results

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) ? Chevron Corp. could shed some light on the status of its California refinery and overseas operations Friday when it reports third-quarter earnings before the market opens.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Chevron already has warned investors to expect substantially lower earnings in a quarter affected by a hurricane, a refinery fire and slowing economic growth.

The sluggish global economy has cut into demand for energy products from gasoline to jet fuel. Concerns about economic growth have caused oil and natural gas prices to fall, which can hurt the bottom line for oil producers.

Against that backdrop, Chevron said production fell in July and August as operations were disrupted by Hurricane Isaac's push through the Gulf of Mexico and planned maintenance on some international facilities.

In addition the company closed a crude unit that was damaged in early August by a fire at a refinery in Richmond, Calif. The unit isn't expected to reopen until next year.

Chevron also sold oil at lower prices in the first two months of the quarter, compared with the third quarter of 2011. Natural gas prices increased slightly.

Chevron also is facing some challenges internationally. Last month, a Brazilian court ordered the company to suspend oil drilling and transportation in the country pending an investigation into two oil spills. Chevron later paid $17.3 million for irregularities in connection with the spills and said it will make improvements in its processes.

Shares of Chevron rose 10.5 percent during the quarter, ending at $116.56 on Sept. 28.

WHY IT MATTERS: Chevron is the second-largest oil company in the U.S., behind Exxon Mobil Corp. Like its peers, the San Ramon, Calif., company continues to look for resources around the world to increase its reserves.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts expect earnings of $2.83 per share on revenue of $67 billion. Chevron anticipates one-time charges to be at least $300 million to $400 million after taxes stemming from corporate and other activities.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Chevron, based in San Ramon, Calif., reported net income of $7.83 billion, or $3.92 per share. Revenue totaled $61.3 billion.

Romney, GOP suddenly plunging onto Democratic turf

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Mitt Romney is suddenly plunging into traditionally Democratic-leaning Minnesota and Pennsylvania, and his GOP allies are trying to put Michigan into play. It's forcing President Barack Obama to defend his own turf ? he's pouring money into television ads in the states and dispatching top backers ? in the campaign's final week.

The question is: Why this Republican move?

GOP efforts in the trio of Rust Belt states could indicate that Romney is desperately searching for a last-minute path to the needed 270 Electoral College votes ? without all-important Ohio. Or just the opposite, that he's so confident in the most competitive battlegrounds that he's pressing for insurance against Obama in what's expected to be a close race.

Or perhaps the Republican simply has money to burn. Use it now or never.

Former President Bill Clinton was dispatched in response on Tuesday. "Barack Obama's policies work better," he declared on the University of Minnesota campus, one of his two stops in a state that offers 10 electoral votes and hasn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972.

This late-game expansion of a campaign playing field that, until now, had focused on just nine states was taking place exactly a week from Election Day. At the same time, Obama spent a second day in Washington to focus on his presidential duties and Romney edged back into active campaigning in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.

"This is a tough time for millions of people ... but America is tougher," the president said during a brief visit to the American Red Cross, where he sought to reassure victims, encourage aid workers ? and warn of more storm damage to come with rising floodwater.

In Ohio, Romney, too, spoke of concern for storm victims, telling supporters who were collecting supplies that "a lot of people hurting this morning."

Beyond the candidates' pause from feverish campaigning, the impact of the storm on the election wasn't all that clear.

National polls show an even race for the popular vote, though Obama appears to have both an edge in key battleground states in the electoral vote hunt and more state-by-state pathways to reach the 270-vote threshold.

Of the nine states where the two men have spent more than $1 billion in advertising since June, Romney is in the strongest position in North Carolina. But public and internal campaign polls show he's locked in stubbornly tight battles in Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada and Virginia and is fighting to overtake Obama's advantage in crucial Ohio as well as Iowa and Wisconsin.

That said, Romney still could win. Anything can happen in the race's closing days ? including Democratic-leaning states like Minnesota, Pennsylvania or Michigan going Republican.

Clinton's Minnesota visit came just days after Romney and his allies started airing TV ads in the state. GOP-leaning groups including Americans for Job Security and American Future Fund were spending $615,000 this week. Romney spent a much lighter $29,000 last week, and it was unclear how much his campaign was spending this week. All together, the efforts led Obama to follow suit to prevent the state from slipping out of his grasp. His campaign was spending $210,000 on ads in Minnesota this week.

Polls show Romney having gained ground in Minnesota though still trailing Obama. And Obama has a much larger campaign footprint of paid staff and volunteers, including more than 30 full-time workers and 12 offices. Romney never has established much of campaign organization in Minnesota.

In Pennsylvania, Romney's campaign started pouring money into TV ads Monday for the first time, though Republican-leaning groups have been on the air in recent days trying to narrow the Obama advantage indicated by surveys. Republican groups - American Crossroads, Restore Our Future and Americans for Job Security - are spending at least $3.9 million this week. That does not include spending by Romney's campaign. Obama aides said the president's campaign is spending $625,000.

Romney has sent most of his Pennsylvania team to other states in recent weeks, and he has had no plan to visit, raising questions about whether he is actually playing to win the state that offers 20 electoral votes and last went Republican in the 1988 presidential election.

GOP allies also were running TV ads in Democratic-tilting Michigan in hopes of softening the ground for Romney in the final days, but there was no indication yet that the Republican himself would make a strong 11th-hour play for the state where he was born and raised. Obama's team said late Tuesday that it was answering Restore Our Future's $2 million in ads in Michigan, which has 16 electoral votes.

Obama's team cast Romney's moves into the three states, which have trended Democrat for more than 20 years, as a desperate act by a candidate who hasn't locked up the states he needs for a White House win.

"They understand they're not going to be able to win Ohio and now they're getting desperate and want to be able to put other states in play," Messina said. "We're going to win Pennsylvania, but we aren't taking anything for granted."

Romney political director Rich Beeson argued that Romney was playing to win, saying in a campaign memo: "With one week to go, and 96% of the vote on the table on Election Day in Pennsylvania, this expansion of the electoral map demonstrates that Governor Romney's momentum has jumped containment from the usual target states."

Other Republicans debated Romney's tactics.

Some GOP strategists in Washington and key states suggested the moves into Minnesota and Pennsylvania provide a cushion for the GOP candidate in case he loses Ohio or another key state.

"I don't think he has to break down a wall," said Republican strategist Greg Strimple, who was the pollster for 2008 GOP nominee John McCain's presidential campaign. "He's in position to run the table, but he needs to have an insurance card in there in case he doesn't."

Still others said it was simply a matter of Romney's campaign and backers having so much money that they can afford to make low-probability efforts in the off-chance that one might bear fruit. Many pointed out that it is almost impossible at this late date for the campaigns and their allied groups to buy more ads in saturated states such as Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

"It's not really desperation" that drives such decisions, said veteran GOP strategist Mike McKenna of Richmond, Va. "You think, 'Maybe I can make the other guy spend some money there,'" even if the state is probably out of reach.

Other Republicans joined Democrats in saying that Romney options are shrinking and he had no choice but to find different paths to victory, and had the money to do it.

"If they didn't have so much money, they wouldn't be able to do something with so little chance of success," said Tad Devine, top electoral strategist for Democratic nominee Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.

He called the Minnesota and Pennsylvania efforts by Romney more a "head-fake than a strategic move" because of what he called enormous Democratic voting trends and electoral advantages. Those include a heavy union presence in both states and a large minority population in Pennsylvania.

Obama carried Pennsylvania and Minnesota each by 10 percentage points in 2008.

Small Business Owners Vote

Small businesses are job creators - voteOn November 6, 2012 Americans have the right to decide who will govern them ? by going to vote. For small business owners, this is our chance to have our say. Everybody and their uncle purports to speak for small businesses 364 days of the year ? whether they know anything about the realities of running a business or not.

But on election day, none of that matters. Election day is the day WE get to speak, with our votes. The only way we can be silenced is if we do not vote.

Many states how have early voting. If that?s your thing, then by all means go vote today. Here is a map of states that allow early voting. If you?re in Oregon or the state of Washington, be sure to mail in or deliver your vote to an official drop-off box as soon as possible.? Otherwise, head over to the polls early in the day on November 6th.

We?re not here to tell you WHO to vote for. Let your intellect and your conscience guide you. Just be sure to vote.

America is a great nation because each person?s vote counts the same as the next. Don?t let others do your talking for you. As small business owners and job creators, be heard on election day.

Satellite images tell tales of changing biodiversity

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Analysis of texture differences in satellite images may be an effective way to monitor changes in vegetation, soil and water patterns over time, with potential implications for measuring biodiversity as well, according to new research published Oct. 24 by Matteo Convertino from the University of Florida and colleagues in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

The authors designed statistical models to estimate two aspects of biodiversity in satellite images: the number of species in a given region, or 'species richness', and the rate at which species entered or were removed from the ecosystem, a parameter termed 'species turnover'.

They tested their models on data gathered over 28 years in a water conservation area in the Florida Everglades and compared their results to previous reports from the region. They found that their models were nearly 100% accurate when predicting species turnover; conventional methods only have 85% accuracy.

According to the authors, their automated method using satellite images could help improve the efficiency and decrease the cost of campaigns that monitor biodiversity and guide policy and conservation decisions. Convertino says, "Texture-based statistical image analysis is a promising method for quantifying seasonal differences and, consequently, the degree to which vegetation, soil, and water patterns vary as a function of natural and anthropic stressors. The application of the presented model to other fields and scales of analysis of ecosystems is a promising research direction.''

Toronto stocks fall for fourth straight day as economic worries weigh ...

TORONTO ? The Toronto stock market closed lower Wednesday despite a wave of positive Canadian earnings reports and indications that China?s manufacturing slump may have bottomed out.

Here are the closing numbers

TSX ? 12,195.02 -30.82 -0.25%

S&P 500 ? 1,408.75 -4.36 -0.31%

Dow ? 13,077.34 -25.19 -0.19%

Nasdaq ? 2,981.70 -8.76 -0.29%

The S&P/TSX composite index fell for a fourth day, down 30.81 points to 12,195.02 with traders still focused on a slowing global economy. The TSX Venture Exchange was off 0.76 of a point at 1,288.75.

The Canadian dollar shed early gains to move down 0.23 of a cent to 100.51 cents US amid weak commodity prices. It had earlier traded as high as 101.22 cents US, a day after the Bank of Canada maintained its bias towards future interest rate hikes and mentioned the possibility of high household debt levels playing a role in raising rates.

U.S. indexes were also lower on top of steep losses Tuesday after earnings disappointments from DuPont chemical and conglomerate 3M Inc. reinforced a gloomy view of global economic prospects.

The Dow Jones industrials declined 25.19 points to 13,077.34, the Nasdaq composite index was down 8.76 points to 2,981.7 and the S&P 500 index slipped 4.36 points to 1,408.75.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve took no new action during its two-day policy meeting.

Having announced a third round of economic stimulus in September, it wants time to assess whether those aggressive steps will boost growth and job creation.

There was a further sign of a revival in the U.S. housing sector as data showed that new home sales for September rose 5.7% to an annualized rate of 389,000, well above consensus estimates of 382,000 and the highest level since April, 2010.

The TSX found some lift from positive news from China, the world?s second-biggest economy.

A preliminary version of HSBC?s monthly purchasing managers? index rose to a three-month high of 49.1 points. That still was below the 50-point level that would indicate expansion, but nevertheless a strong improvement from September?s 47.9 reading.

The base metals sector was up 1.32% as December copper was unchanged at US$3.56 a pound. Worries about deteriorating economic conditions pushed copper down 18 cents over the previous four sessions.

Teck Resources Ltd. shares were 85 cents higher at $31.39 as the Vancouver-based producer of copper, coal and other minerals announced plans to severely slash capital spending this year and next in the face of a slowing global economy. Teck also reported net income attributable to shareholders of $180-million or 31 cents per diluted share, compared with $814-million or $1.37 is the same 2011 period. Revenue was $2.5-billion, down from $3.38-billion.

The industrials sector rose 1.36% as Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. said its third-quarter net income was $224-million, an increase of $37-million or 20%, and diluted earnings per share were $1.30, up 18% compared with a year earlier. The profit beat analyst estimates by a penny a share and revenue was slightly above the consensus estimate and its shares ran up $5.29 to $93.18.

The telecom sector rose almost one per cent while Rogers Communications Inc. shares gained $1.35 to $42.43 as the telecom posted net income of $495-million or 96 cents per share, seven cents better than estimates and up from $489-million or 90 cents per share a year ago. Its revenue increased to $3.17 billion, up about one per cent from the same time last year and largely in line with analyst estimates.

The energy sector fell 0.5% with December crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange lower for a fifth day, down 94 cents to US$85.73 a barrel after sliding almost $2 on Tuesday.

Losses deepened in the wake of data showing a bigger than expected rise in crude supplies last week. Crude supplies rose by 5.9 million barrels, much higher than the 1.7-million-barrel increase economists had expected.

Encana Corp. reported a US$1.24-billion net loss in the third quarter, primarily due to the impact of lower natural gas prices over the past year. But Encana said it was still on track to meet its financial guidance for the full year. Its shares lost 70 cents to $21.86.

The gold sector was the leading decliner, down per cent while December bullion fell $7.80 to US$1,701.60 an ounce. Goldcorp Inc. faded $1.46 to $40.79.

The Canadian earnings season is moving into high gear this week and, like in the U.S., expectations are muted.

?I think it will be fair to middling in terms of earnings, I don?t think it will be particularly negative, I don?t think it will be particularly positive,? said Chris King, portfolio manager at Morgan, Meighen and Associates.

?We only have three (major) TSX sectors: financials will be OK, mining will be negative and energy will be neutral.?

The early earnings news from the U.S. was also positive with aircraft maker Boeing turning in quarterly earnings of $1.35 a share, well above the $1.12 a share that had been expected. Boeing?s 2012 overall profit outlook is expected to come in at $4.80 to $4.95 a share, against analyst expectations of $4.72 a share. But Boeing stock lost early momentum to close down 11 cents to $72.71.

Facebook was also in focus after the world?s biggest social media company provided some proof it can make money from mobile advertising. Facebook said after the market close Tuesday that some 14% of its ad revenue came from mobile advertising during the latest quarter. Its stock surged 19% as Citi research upgraded the stock to buy.

First Time Buyers - Zillow Real Estate Advice

To user 0985550 - there are many different types of loans available.? Some are based on the geographic area you are buying in (such as a USDA rural loan), some? on how much money you have saved for a downpayment (an FHA loan requires less money down then a conventional loan), some on the type of home you are purchasing and whether it will need work or not (a rehab loan may be your best bet if you are buying a fixer-upper) or if you are buying a foreclosure, the bank or governmental agency that is selling it may have some special loans available to you. If you are a veteran, you should use a VA loan. You may also be eligible for local state and county financing.

Where to start?? Typically I recommend finding a good LOCAL mortgage lender. A bank or credit union will typically only loan their own money and will have a more limited portfolio of loans available. A mortgage banker broker will be able to loan money from the bank that he works for AND he will be able to shop the other lenders to see if one has a better program for you then he has. A mortgage broker doesn't lend his own banks money, but he shops banks and other lending institutions for a loan for you.? If you expect to be using any first time homebuyer grant monies, then you will need to check with the agency handling those funds since only certain lenders are typically authorized to issue them.

How to find a good LOCAL lender - you may want to start by talking to friends who have purchased a home recently, or your bank or credit union. An excellent source for a referral to a good lender is your Realtor.? They will want you to use a local reputable lender since they know that will get you to a much smoother closing.

A good lender will give you alternatives - he or she will go over the programs that you are eligible for and will help you to determine which program is the best fit for your needs.? He'll discuss with you if a 15 or 20 or 30 yr loan would be your best alternative based on how long you intend to be in the home and how you expect your income to change over that time.

One thing I always recommend is that you ask the lender to run the numbers 2 ways - the standard way is how much buying power do I have based on my credit rating, debt to income ratio and overall financial picture. That way you know how much you can afford if the right home pops up. I typically do not recommend that anyone buy at the top of their price point - people who do have a tendency to be house poor.? When all your money is going toward your house payments and you don't have money to go out to eat or to a movie or to socialize with friends, you will end up hating your home.? As a result, I tell buyers to ask their lender to run the numbers a second way - tell the lender how much you want to spend each month on your house payments and ask them to run the numbers in reverse and tell you what price point of a home you should be looking at.

Good luck

[CAMARINE SUR] WAKEBOARDING AT CAMSUR WATER ...

[CAMARINE SUR] WAKEBOARDING AT CAMSUR WATER SPORTS COMPLEX

There is no doubt that Wakeboarding in the Philippines is becoming bigger and better. Thanks to the beautiful province of Camarines Sur, now considered a prime tourist destination for a genuine water sports adventure.

WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
CamSur Watersports Complex or popularly known as CWC is a world renowned? Watersports park in Bicol region. Professional boarders, most of them are coming from different countries. They fly to Naga? just for the six point cable ski system. This is the very first World class Watersports complex in Asia. It is strategically located within the Provincial Capitol Complex just outside Naga City.

WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
The six hectare complex with its six point cable ski system has been attracting pro riders from countries in Europe, Australia and including the U.S.

I find the place a unique Water sports park. It is specifically constructed for people who want to try wake-boarding as a sport and recreation. The Water sports complex is not just a haven for pro wake-boarders who are die hard enthusiasts of Wake-boarding. The CWC also designed for beginners who just want to try the sport and have a feel of snow boarding and surfing on the water.

WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
Cable ski parks like CWC started in Florida, USA which has been categorized as an extreme water sport all over the world. In the Philippines, the little known sport and recreation is now a booming trendy hobby.

I was really impressed with the cable lake which has plenty of room to execute every air or obstacle. The man made island together with the smooth sandy beaches surrounding it was astounding.

WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
The trendy watersports complex is the brainchild of Governor Luis Villafuerte, who happens to be a huge fan of wake-boarding.

Now what is wakeboarding?

Wakeboarding is described as a cross between surfing and snowboarding on water. But of course the lesser injuries if someone falls into the water. Think of it this way, you try to defy the laws of Physics which unbelievably gives the enthusiast a genuine high.

WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
Pulled by an overhead cable suspended 8-12 meters above water surface. The cable travels continuously and the skiers will be hooked up to the cable and runs counterclockwise around the artificial lake which is powered by a variable speed electric motor.

For beginners, the basic equipment is for free. You will also be guided by a certified resident instructors too.

The Water park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Prices range from Php 170 per hour to Php1000 plus for the whole day and night rate.

The great thing about the sports complex, CWC has its own beach volleyball area, an olympic size swimming pool for those who want to take a break.
WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
If you want to stay for a weekend or even a long holiday getaway, accommodation are up for grabs and is within walking distance from CWC.

They have Eco village, Mansion Suites and Villas which are also located within the vicinity of the Provincial Capitol Complex. You can book for reservations at a reasonable price. Acquaint yourselves with their spacious rooms equipped with air-conditioning system, cable TV channel and hot/cold showers.

WAKEBOARDING CAMSUR
I love food so we feasted for gastronomic delights and treats at their in-house restaurants. Take a break at their guest lounges with WI-FI access. Guests will surely enjoy a round of darts, volleyball, football, billiards and feel the traditional massage therapies at their spa and recreation center. Needless to say, CWC is just one of the beautiful destinations in Bicol region. For adventurous people one can also hike to waterfalls, ride helicopters, explore the caves, swim with the whale sharks in Donsol, Sorsogon and finally take pictures with Mt. Mayon as your backdrop.

Getting to Naga is easy. One must take a flight to Naga City via Air Philippines or Cebu Pacific. Travel time takes approximately an hour. If you are up for a challenge? and a genuine adventure, air-conditioned and ordinary buses are also a good option. This time it could take up to 8-9 hours.

It?s more fun in the Philippines

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa calls for major cuts in spending

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

With a new report expected to show that city spending continues to outpace revenue, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa released a far-reaching list of proposals to cut costs through consolidation of departments, cuts in programs and the elimination of more city jobs.

"It remains critical that the city streamline the way we do business," Villaraigosa said in a letter to the council released late on Monday.

Among his recommendations was calling on the council to cut the 209 positions he had first called to eliminate in this year's budget and on which the council delayed action.

He also called for reducing starting pay for new civilian workers, increasing the amount contributed to health care and reducing the annual cost of living adjustment paid workers.

While the mayor did not provide any figures for expected savings from these actions, he also suggested some more far-reaching proposals.

Among them is separating the civil and criminal divisions of the City Attorney's Office, to allow the city to hire outside attorneys as needed to advise them on cases. Such a proposals has been considered in the past, with an elected city attorney handling only the criminal division.

The mayor also suggested the city look at further consolidation of city agencies, such as the Bureau of Street Services with the Department of Transportation and Street Lighting, and Planning with Building and Safety.

The mayor also said he wanted to

speed up the review of Fire Department deployment, look at increased outsourcing for services such as ambulances and to increase the use of part-time workers.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana is expected, possibly by today, to release the quarterly financial status report assessing the city's financial health.

Well, let?s celebrate it! (If you can?t beat it?) October is Eczema Awareness Month and recognizes this common inflammatory skin condition that affects approximately 15 million Americans.

That itch, that rash; no matter what you do, it will never permanently go away. Perhaps a skin cr?me here or there can temporarily calm the irritation, but it will never truly disappear. Perhaps it is worse in the colder months or perhaps worse when your respiratory allergies flare. Either way, it is annoying.

Eczema is characterized by a recurrent/chronic red, scaling, oozing and itching skin. Perhaps you have experienced eczema but never thought to review this uncomfortable condition with your doctor. Symptoms are simply irritating (literally).

However, in more severe cases (atopic dermatitis), discomfort can make for a poor quality of life especially if there is an additive bacterial infection complicating the condition. This scratchy rash affects both adults and children. I have cared for kids in my practice with atopic dermatitis that is so severe and physically debilitating that it causes them social isolation. Many people will develop more skin redness and irritation due to an infection in addition to inflammation.

If the steroid cr?me the doctor prescribes is not working, then it is time to take a different approach. In the old days, we would recommend a bleach bath. But that takes too much water and who has time for a daily bath anyway? Alternatives include using an antibacterial shower gel (CLN BodyWash is an effective product) which is a far more convenient and water-conserving method.

The cold months are coming, so keep the skin well-hydrated. If the dryness becomes more flakey, red and persistent, get to your doctor. If you are ?itching? to know more about eczema, refer to the web site www.nationaleczema.org.

'Top Gun' director died with sleep aid in system

Benoit Tessier / Reuters file

Director Tony Scott poses during a photocall in Paris in this July 20, 2009 file photo.

By Reuters

LOS ANGELES --?Filmmaker Tony Scott had an anti-depressant and sleep aid in his bloodstream when he leapt to his death from a suspension bridge in August, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said on Monday.

Preliminary autopsy results confirmed that Scott's death, which baffled investigators and much of Hollywood, was a suicide, caused by blunt force trauma and drowning.

The 68-year-old British-born director of such blockbusters as "Top Gun" and "Beverly Hills Cop II" had therapeutic levels of the anti-depressant Mirtazapine and the prescription sleep-aid Lunesta in his system, coroner's investigators found.

But the findings shed no light on a motive for Scott to commit suicide. A coroner's spokesman said a final report was still two weeks away.

Family members have dismissed early reports that Scott was suffering from inoperable brain cancer and Craig Harvey, operations chief for the coroner, has previously said that there were no obvious signs of a tumor. The preliminary autopsy report made no mention of any evidence of serious illness.

Investigators have offered no theories as to why Scott took his life, and a note he left behind did not explain the suicide.

The last person to see Scott was an onlooker parking his car on the Vincent Thomas Bridge over Los Angeles Harbor, who saw the director leap into the water just after noon on August 19. His body was recovered by law enforcement several hours later.

The bridge, the surface of which clears the harbor's navigation channel by a height of about 185 feet, connects the port district of San Pedro at the southern tip of Los Angeles to Terminal Island in the harbor.?

Scott, born in northern England and frequently seen behind the camera in his signature faded red baseball cap, is credited with directing more than two dozen movies and television shows and producing nearly 50 titles.

He built a reputation for muscular but stylish high-octane thrillers that showcased some of Hollywood's biggest stars in a body of work that dated to the 1980s and established him as one of the most successful action directors in the business.?

At the time of his death, Scott was reported to be involved in developing several film projects including a sequel to his biggest hit, the 1986 fighter-jet adventure "Top Gun," which starred Tom Cruise.?

The brother of Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott, he is survived by his third wife, Donna, with whom he had two children.

95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (101) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (96) | Rotten (5)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

Part music documentary, part mystery, all inspirational homage to unrecognized genius everywhere.

For the most part an endearing documentary about mystery Bob Dylan-like singer Sixto Rodriguez.

An amazing story. If music is the glue of the world then Rodriguez is the super glue.

Does a nice job of presenting the mystery and history of Rodriguez... but seems incomplete, and biased in favor of its predetermined narrative.

Rodriguez, once he emerges from the mists, appears to be a sweet, decent - and remarkably intact - soul. One wonders if he had achieved his rock 'n' roll dreams, would his daughters have turned out so well?

There's a fascinating story in the rise and fall of singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, "the Latin Bob Dylan," and it's too bad that the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" doesn't tell enough of it.

A soulful, lip-tremblingly joyous movie that's one of the more affecting experiences I've had in a cinema this year.

Engrossing even when it's a little unfocused.

One of the most bizarre pop music documentaries ever...a singularly fascinating true-life tale that many of its participants still find difficult to believe.

...it isn't merely the content that makes Searching for Sugar Man so affecting: it's the way that Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul sets up the story and peels away the mystery of Rodriguez, one layer at time.

A mystery as compelling as any fictional detective story.

The first half of this film is mysterious whereas the second half is wonderfully inspiring. It's proof that truth really is stranger than fiction.

This is a fine documentary; insightful and entertaining with a genteel approach to uncovering a figure so close to the hearts of an unexpected fan base.

A celebration of an artist and the power of art to transcend time and place

Much credit to director Malik Bendjelloul for surprising this cynical and desensitised film watcher.

For those familiar with the story of Rodriguez, this engaging documentary on his substantial success in South Africa will prove both illuminating and bemusing.

I was instantly hooked by this unique documentary...If you are a traveller on the road of life, don't miss this unforgettable treasure of a film

This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

10 most haunted houses in the US

WinchesterMysteryHouse.com

Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, Calif., took 38 years to build and includes twisting and turning hallways, dead ends and secret panels.

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

Creaking floors, inexplicable cold drafts and eerie sounds usually don't top the list of dream house features.

Unless, of course, we're talking about dream haunted house features.

It's October, and we're forgoing the usual roundup of eye candy in favor of some cobweb-draped places most people wouldn't dare put a down payment on.

Tales of horror, glimpses of ghosts and a bevy of cobweb decor ? it's all here.

Winchester House
San Jose, Calif.
It's as if original owner Sarah Winchester wanted her home to be haunted. The eccentric widow of William Winchester, founder of Winchester rifles, held nightly seances to gain guidance from spirits and her dead husband for the home?s design. The end result? A maze-like structure that took 38 years to build and includes twisting and turning hallways, dead ends, secret panels, a window built into a floor, staircases leading to nowhere, doors that open to walls, upside-down columns and rooms built, then intentionally closed off? ? all to ward off and confuse evil spirits.

Gardette-LaPrete House
716 Dauphine St, New Orleans
This Greek revival home was the site of the one of the grisliest murders in New Orleans' history. A Turkish merchant, renting the home, was buried alive in the backyard and his harem entourage murdered. Years later, the French Quarter home is still said to be the site of the merchant's wanderings, and on certain nights, exotic music and incense from ancient parties waft from the home.

Hampton Lillibridge
507 E Saint Julian St, Savannah, Ga.
This historic home was moved to its current location in Savannah?by a local restoration expert. As work began on the house, workers reported odd noises and a male presence. Early on, they discovered a crypt on the building site half filled with water and covered it.

Despite the rumors of hauntings, the home was finished and was last on the market for $2.2 million in 2011. Although it's off the market now, there's no word of a buyer.

LaLaurie House
1140 Royal St, New Orleans
The LaLaurie House, like many haunted homes, has a pretty horrific back story. Owned by socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie and her husband, Dr. Louis LaLaurie, the house was the reported setting for vicious cruelty against the couple's slaves. Reportedly the slaves were subjected to torturous medical experiments that went on unbeknownst to the New Orleans community until a fire broke out and? neighbors rushing to rescue discovered the gruesome scenes. The LaLauries fled the country due to the backlash, and the home passed through several owners, each who claimed to hear mysterious screams and see apparitions of the tortured slaves.

At one point actor Nicolas Cage owned the home, and while he said he never saw any ghosts, he wasn't immune to the home's sinister vibes; he lost the property to foreclosure in 2009.

Joe Mabel

Whaley House
San Diego
In 1857, an entrepreneurial Thomas Whaley took advantage of a deeply discounted property in San Diego's Old Town neighborhood that once held the area's hangings. He tore down the gallows and proceeded to build his Greek Revival brick home. However, soon after Whaley and his family moved in, they reported hearing heavy footsteps moving about the house. Even after the Whaleys moved out, various tenants reported seeing ghosts and hearing the footsteps.

Today the historic home is a museum and is open daily for tourists to see if they, too, hear and see the ghostly apparitions.

FranklinCastleClub.com

Franklin Castle
4308 Franklin Blvd, Cleveland
Franklin Castle has both a creepy history as well as a creepy exterior. Home to Hannes Tiedemann, the house was reportedly the site of many vicious murders. Built in 1864, the home has all the makings of a haunted mansion: stone tower and turrets, gargoyles and wrought-iron fencing, not to mention sounds of babies crying, doors slamming and footsteps.

According to the property history, the home was last sold for $260,000 in August 2011. No word yet, if the homeowners are having any eerie experiences.

McPike Mansion
Alton, IL
Haunted houses?? how about a whole haunted city? Alton claims to be the one of the most haunted areas in America and is home to McPike Mansion, which is host to a number of active ghosts.

There's no specific backstory to the ghostly going-ons, but visitors and residents of the brick manse have claimed to be hugged by an unseen woman, hear the laughter of children and see mysterious mists and orbs of light. As far as hauntings go, not too sinister.

Borden House
240 2nd St, Fall River, Mass.
This home was the site of one of the most infamous crimes of all time: the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, reportedly at the hands of Andrew's daughter Lizzie. As the nursery rhyme goes, Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave both her father and step-mother whacks. However, Lizzie was acquitted and moved out of the home.

The home of the murder still stands in Fall River and operates as a bed-and-breakfast, where guests report seeing Andrew and Abby wandering about.

Myrtles Plantation
Saint Francisville, La.
An antebellum home in a voodoo-rich area of Louisiana is the likely place for a haunted home. Built in?1796, Myrtles Plantation was taken over in 1808 by Clark Woodruff, his wife, Sara, and their three children. According to legend, Woodruff had a relationship with one of his slaves, Chloe, who was jealous of Woodruff's wife. Story goes that Chloe baked a birthday cake for Sara and the kids, including poisonous oleander leaves in the treat. Sara and two of their children died. Chloe confessed, but fellow slaves retaliated, hanging Chloe and dumping her body in the Mississippi.

Chloe isn't the only ghost said to haunt Myrtles Plantation. A Civil War solider was murdered on the steps of the home, and an ancient Native American burial ground is said to beneath the house. All this adds up to a home rich in creepy incidences.

Chambers Mansion
2220 Sacramento St, San Francisco, Calif.
Like most haunted homes, there's a bit of confusion surrounding the true story behind Chambers Mansion. Built in 1887, the home was named after its first owner, silver mine tycoon Richard Chambers, who lived in the home with two nieces who reportedly hated each other.

When Chambers died in 1901, the nieces inherited the mansion. One reportedly bought the house next door and moved in while the other sister, Claudia, stayed. Claudia was discovered cut in half in the mansion one day, due to a "farm implementation" accident. However, a ghost expert has claimed that Claudia was in fact murdered, and still haunts the Pacific Heights home today.

(AP) ? The Boston Red Sox are hoping that two big trades will help them get back to the playoffs after missing out three years in a row.

The first was a genuine blockbuster that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto and Josh Beckett to the Los Angeles Dodgers and freed up more than $250 million in future salaries. The second was the deal that brought John Farrell back to Fenway Park on Sunday.

The Red Sox hired Farrell to be their new manager after pursuing him for more than a year, agreeing to trade infielder Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays to pry their former pitching coach out of the manager's chair in Toronto.

"I'm extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston," Farrell said in a statement released by the Red Sox. "I love this organization. It's a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us."

Farrell had been the Toronto manager the past two seasons, posting a 154-170 record with two fourth-place finishes. He had one year remaining on his contract with the Blue Jays, allowing them to demand compensation from Boston.

It's the second time the Red Sox have pursued Farrell for their managerial job, closing the deal this time by working out a rare but not unprecedented trade for an active manager. Boston will give up Aviles, who hit .250 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs last season, and get right-hander David Carpenter in return.

It is the seventh time in major league history that one team has traded for a manager while he was under contract to another, the Red Sox said. Last year, the Miami Marlins obtained Ozzie Guillen from the Chicago White Sox in a deal that also included three players.

Farrell received a three-year deal in Boston, which also interviewed San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus, New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale.

"We met some outstanding managerial candidates in this process," Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said in the statement. "John Farrell brings a unique blend of managerial experience, leadership and presence, pitching expertise, front office experience, and an established track record with many members of our uniformed staff and members of our front office. He will hit the ground running."

The pitching coach in Boston for four years, Farrell was the heir apparent to Terry Francona before going to Toronto two seasons ago when it seemed like Francona would be sticking around long-term. When Francona was let go after an unprecedented collapse in September 2011, the Red Sox tried to pry Farrell loose from the Blue Jays.

But Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos asked for a top player in return for Farrell, who had been there only one season and gone 81-81.

So the Red Sox turned to Bobby Valentine to bring discipline to a clubhouse in which players drank beer and ate fried chicken in the clubhouse during games. But the former New York Mets and Japanese Leagues manager alienated so many players that the team was forced to bail out on the season, trading three highly paid but underperforming players for a chance at a fresh start in 2013.

Valentine was fired after finishing in last place with a 69-93 record ? four games behind Toronto and the team's worst record since 1965. General manager Ben Cherington was back in the market for a manager, and this time he didn't need a hard-line disciplinarian.

"The team is in a different point than it was last year when we hired Bobby," Cherington said after firing Valentine. "The roster was fairly mature and we felt, mistakenly in retrospect, but we felt at the time, that we had a chance to win and the team was ready to win. We're now at a different point."

Farrell, 50, had a promising pitching career with the Cleveland Indians before an injury kept him out for the entire 1991 and '92 seasons. He returned to pitch sparingly in four more seasons, finishing his career with a 36-46 record and a 4.56 ERA.

He coached at Oklahoma State, where he pitched in college, from 1997-2001 and then spent five years in the Indians' front office before Francona, a former Cleveland teammate, brought him to Boston as pitching coach. Under Farrell's guidance from 2007-10, Red Sox pitchers held opponents to an AL-low .254 batting average and led the league with in 4,771 strikeouts.

Farrell is familiar with Red Sox management from his time in Boston and has worked with many of the club's pitchers ? including starters Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, who were All-Stars under his tutelage.

"His broad set of experiences, and exceptional leadership skills, make him the ideal person to lead our team," Cherington said in the news release. "I have known him in various capacities throughout my career, and I hold him in the highest regard as a baseball man and as a person."

Aviles, 31, is a career .277 hitter who played 136 games for the Red Sox in 2012, mostly at shortstop.

Carpenter, 27, is 1-5 with one save and a 5.70 ERA over 67 career relief appearances with the Astros and Blue Jays. He appeared in 33 games in 2012, 30 with the Astros before being sent to the Blue Jays in a 10-player trade on July 20; he also made 23 minor-league appearances last season.

Originally a catcher, Carpenter converted to pitching in 2008.

If The Health Care Industry Married Silicon Valley, They'd Have ...

I just got back to San Francisco from the 15-year celebration of LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. It was an interesting time to be in Austin, as most of the world is still shell-shocked from Armstrong stepping down as the Chairman due to outside pressure from his doping scandal. However, most people had a positive attitude when it comes to the direction that LIVESTRONG is going in, but there?s definitely room for improvement.

Cancer is just one of the diseases that needs better treatment and a cure. While I was in Austin, I thought a lot about my smart friends back in Silicon Valley and all of the hard problems that they?re solving in their daily jobs at startups or companies like Facebook and Google. Those thoughts led me to wonder what would happen if you put all of those brilliant people into a room together to ?hack a cure.? I?m talking about all-in stuff here, not a conference or chat ?once in a while.?

Think about all of the things that Apple has done with hardware and software for the mobile industry in the past five-lus years, I still can?t get over how small the iPhone 5 is compared to the 4S. It really is lighter and thinner, even though it?s ?bigger.? If we can solve ?problems? like that, which aren?t really problems, I?m sure that we could come up with some unique practices, tactics and technology to beat diseased like Cancer and AIDS into submission.

I know that there are a lot of health care companies out here who are already helping patients access their records, interface with doctors and improve their experience battling a wide range of illnesses. There?s also companies like 23andMe who are mapping our DNA to try and help direct us to preventative health care.

I love it, but we can do more, can?t we? Celebrities are getting involved in charitable causes, and that?s cool. It helps spread more awareness for important things. There?s a place for geeks in this equation.

If the health care industry could ship information as quickly as Facebook ships code on its site, and with the same passion as Zuckerberg?s crew, I think that we could do some real damage when it comes to lengthening our lives and improving health care overall. Why hasn?t it been done yet, though? Health care isn?t a sexy industry. Neither is education, sadly.

?What?s Hot? is Getting Old

When I look at my inbox and see thirty new photo-taking apps, I get really frustrated. Not because people aren?t trying hard, but that we?re stuck on solving the same ?problem?, which really wasn?t a problem in the first place, over and over again. Too much time, creativity and money is being spent on buying short domain names, beautiful interfaces and a business model that might help you raise a buck or two. But what comes after that?

Not everyone is going to sell to Facebook. Trust me.

What if the folks who are working really hard on copying things that are already successful forked over to a new set of problems, like the medical industry, health care or education? Sure, it?s not ?sexy?, and sure you won?t get 20M users and lots of press coverage, but engineers who are experienced in moving and computing massive amounts of data could actually stumble onto a breakthrough accidentally. That?s how clinicians and doctors find cures and new drugs. Trial and error.

What if Silicon Valley Paired up With Doctors?

That trial and error approach from the medical industry, with creative tactics to solve complex problems from Silicon Valley, is exactly what?s missing in the world right now.

While I was in Austin I spoke to many folks who volunteer at LIVESTRONG and I asked them what we?re lacking in cancer research and support right now. Most of them said ?technology.? They don?t mean apps, they mean they need the brains, passion and manpower of the best place to kick thing?s ass in the world. That?s Silicon Valley.

Sure, a lot of folks who have flipped companies have given money to charity, and that?s great. Really, it?s awesome to support a charity you care about, even if its not LIVESTRONG. But what?s more important than money is time. There?s only so much time on this planet to do things, and if you don?t have enough people doing them, you have yourself a time shortage.

That means it?s like that you, the reader, will be affected by some nasty illness or disease at some point in your life. It?s scary to think about, but it doesn?t have to be. We have a real opportunity in this information age to make a difference.

No more talking

What I?m doing right now is talking, and that?s not going to get anything done. What it can get done though is spark the minds of those really smart people that I mentioned at the top of this piece. Maybe someone who has a few spare cycles on the weekend or nights can look at some of the latest clinical trials, maybe reach out to a Doctor or lab, and get involved.

Maybe the whole health care industry needs to wise up and reach out to the Valley too. Maybe they should open their doors to smart people in flip-flops more often. Hold a hackathon for good, and not worry about being out-smarted by someone who doesn?t have the degree, experience or credentials that they have.

See, to do really amazing things, sometimes you need to suck it up and just do it.

I honestly believe that a cure for cancer will be assisted largely in part by a new breed of technologist, one who doesn?t care about the glitz and glamor of being a ?Silicon Valley Rock Star?, but one that truly wants to change the world.

Let?s do something. Geeks, meet Doctors. Doctors, meet Geeks. Go have babies named ?Cure.? It ain?t sexy, but it could save our lives.

(Just in case you?re wondering what action I?m going to take, I am working with LIVESTRONG to bridge the gap between Austin and Silicon Valley. In fact, I?ll be pitching some big companies on doing a few meetups and hackathons in the coming future. I need some help though.)
